So, are men whose Viagra is covered by insurance also prostitutes?

Wednesday, February 29th, 2012 · 19 Comments »

I glanced at the news a few minutes ago, just long enough to be reminded of why I hate the news. It seems that Rush Limbaugh has found yet another way to be both asinine and grotesquely misogynist: he’s denouncing Sandra Fluke as a prostitute because she testified in favor of health insurance coverage for birth control. According to Rush, having your birth control pills covered by your insurance means you’re being paid to have sex which means you’re a prostitute.

What is the drug that he’s on that makes this stuff happen in his head?

Anyway, what is perhaps even more stunning than Rush’s latest excursion into creative logic is that his hordes of followers think it makes perfect sense. I checked a couple of the wingnut sites on Memeorandum, and they’re all, “Exactly! It’s so clear now! These women are prostitutes!” They appear to be serious. No mention of Viagra, of course.

It’s worth bearing in mind that not only are people on the right incredibly misogynistic, but they’re also incredibly, spectacularly, jaw-droppingly dumb.

These days I’m just reduced to rooting for the asteroid. Let the cockroaches take over – they might do better.

Piss poor logic. Women can have sex with or without birth control, so it’s not like being “paid to have sex” at all. The pill just prevents pregnancy.

On the other hand, Viagra makes it possible for men to have sex when they otherwise couldn’t. So calling insurance coverage of birth control being paid to have sex — as stupid a comparison as it is — is much more apt when applied to men/Viagra than to women.

What was Rush being paid to do with all those Viagra pills in the Dominican Republic?

Catherine D., you’re right. Roaches just get to work. I’ve never seen one waste a second on bigotry.

    Sigh.

It’s a delicate blend of Viagra, Oxycontin, capitalism and Patriarchy!

  5. Sameol says:

The guy who’s cheated on all 10 or so of his wives also called her a slut.

  6. Susan says:

Instead of apologizing, he offered to pay for her birth control if she would provide him with pornographic films of her having sex.

Just when you think they can’t get any worse…

Rush Limbaugh is human feces and he’s proud of it. I’ll bake a fancy cake and have myself a party when he finally keels over.

Anyone know who his sponsors are?

  8. cabochon says:

I second Toonces. RL is filth. I am seconding baking a celebratory cake upon his demise, too.

Limbaugh is a scumbag money whore.

OK, did anyone else’s head explode reading this gem from David Atkins at Digby’s:

Even abstinent women who are not seeking to have children should be on the pill, anyway, absent other more permanent forms of birth control, if for no other reason than in case of a felicitous meeting at best, or involuntarily sexual coercion at worst.

  12. Violet Socks says:

Oh good lord. Okay, David, thanks for playing, but no thanks.

Re this whole brouhaha, which is getting more and more brou and less ha by the minute: I should probably write a post but I’m too sickened by it all. There is so much hatred of women on display right now it makes me feel kind of shaky and queasy.

  13. Violet Socks says:

It’s like a group fugue state. That’s what’s going on in the GOP; it’s like they’ve all achieved some kind of psychotic lift-off into woman-hating outer space.

  14. anna says:

Now Bill O’Reilly is in on it:

“Let me get this straight, Ms. Fluke, and I’m asking this with all due respect,” he said. “You want me to give you my hard-earned money so you can have sex?” (Fluke is actually calling for her university’s private insurance plan to cover birth control.)

Ack! I got seriously mansplained on the Atkins post comments thread. And only two others even picked up on the “in case of rape” crap. Asteroid, dammit, asteroid!

    I second that emotion, Toonces!
I just wrote an email to ProFlowers as a “great customer” suggesting that they cease sponsoring the gasbag’s hate fest or lose my business, forever.
Hoping that many women (and men) do the same.

Rush gives me an idea — publish the names (and photos) of guys who get their Viagra paid for via insurance in the newspaper. Just like they do with johns.
