Thank you, President Obama

This is what happens when you restrict Plan B:

CVS Refuses To Sell Texas Man Emergency Contraception For His Wife.

I just want to remind everyone that the FDA was on the brink of ending this crap once and for all, when the Obama Administration unilaterally stepped in to keep the restrictions on Plan B. Because it’s just “common sense,” according to President Obama Who Is A Goddamn Republican.

Oh, but things would be so much worse for women under a Republican administration! Remember that threat?

  2. Violet Socks says:

People are still saying that. Even right now, in response to this. It’s amazing. Check out this comment on the story at Crooks and Liars:

Are there still people who don’t see?
    DemoChristian — 1/7/12 7:11pm

I am sick unto death with Progressives, Liberals and the Mythical Independent claiming that it doesn’t matter who we vote for.
Certainly there are Democrats who might support “Religious Exception” legislation, but the final battle over this type of insanity will be at the Supreme Court. And only Republicans pretending to speak for Jesus will appoint Justices who are likely to uphold such blatantly unconstitutional provisions.
    Vote!
If you can’t hold your nose and vote for Obama, imagine Supreme Court loaded with the appointments from a President Romney or Santorum or Paul!
I remember laughing at the notion that such an intelligent and thoughtful and religious man as James Earl Carter would lose to a bad actor who played second banana to a chimp and sold laundry soap. I’ve seen a fool claim that trees caused more pollution than cars and that cutting taxes would raise revenue get elected and nearly deified.

No matter how insane and stupid the current crop of republican Candidates are, they can still win!

You have to wonder. Did this person miss the news that it was President Obama, not some Republican, who made a special effort a few weeks ago to overturn the FDA and keep Plan B off the shelves?

  3. redheadedfemme says:

People are saying it because it’s true. Did you watch the Republican debate tonight? Every single one of those clowns said they wanted to overturn Roe v. Wade, and a couple of them said they wanted to get rid of Griswold v. Connecticut as well.

Sure, I may not agree with the Plan B thing (although since I’m a believer in picking your battles, I’m not going to get worked up over it). But that damn sure isn’t going to stop me from going all out for President Obama. If any one of those Republican idiots get into office, they’re going to make the Dubya years look like a picnic.

  4. Sameol says:

The very first comment on the Dallas Observer blog’s story (Think Progress’s source) is, “Not to worry, President Santorum will take care of this instance of gender discrimination.”

Hey, at least Obama was not wearing a sweater vest when he decided to overrule expert recommendations for a craven political calculus.

  5. Carmonn says:

I hope DemoChristian’s comment isn’t a portent of what’s to come, I can’t take any blather about the Supreme Court.

What’s our rallying cry going to be, “Sure, due in large part to our spinelessness and collusion, extremists already have an unassailable majority. But anything done can yet be undone–just vote for us in perpetuity and with luck, we can regain a majority by as soon as 2041!”?

  6. anna says:

Just in case anyone hasn’t heard, there’s a really cool feminist project that needs your help:

Frances Hugle was a scientist and engineer who developed many processes and pieces of equipment under secret military contract while at Baldwin in the 1950s. She went on to become a Silicon Valley pioneer, including co-founding Siliconix as its first Director of Research. Recently, some of her papers were recovered from a burn pile. Her daughter and others are trying to raise money to have the papers preserved, electronically archived, and published. They are a rare record of the work of a female scientist in the 1950s, and may become lost forever if money is not raised to preserve them (specifically, a total of $2,500 is needed by the end of January.)
If you could give any money OR put a link to this project on your blog/twitter/Facebook/website/etc, that would be a great help.

    Here is the link: http://www.kickstarter.com/pro...

    Thank you so much.

  8. Toonces says:

At this point, Obama could overturn Roe v. Wade himself and people would justify it.

Who is Obama pandering to with this move? The extreme anti-choicers who want to outlaw contraception altogether (except for condoms)? The ones who also think Obama is a Marxist Muslim terrorist sent from 1950′s communist Russia to destroy the US? They’ll vote for him now? Really??? Nobody except for the batshit crazy, womb-obsessed, extreme woman-haters (as opposed to the more moderate ones) would have cared if the FDA had been allowed to go about its business.

  9. Violet Socks says:

At this point, Obama could overturn Roe v. Wade himself and people would justify it.

Yep. That’s the problem with having a fake Democrat in office. Obama is doing everything Bush did and more; the difference is that when Bush was in office, Democrats and liberals in general opposed this crap. But now that Obama’s doing it, it’s all okay. Torture, spying, suspension of civil liberties, restrictions on women’s rights and reproductive choice, Wall Street, environmental trashing — Obama is simply serving out Bush’s third term. And where is the opposition? Nowhere. Instead we have people saying we must reelect Obama because, uh, Republicans would somehow be worse.

  10. gxm17 says:

Oh good grief, redheadedfemme, what part about Obama being a backstabbing, anti-woman, lying sack of excrement do you not understand? It is the Dems fault that the choice debate has taken up residence in rightwing crazy town. Obama has kowtowed and sucked Republican ass for four years now. “Going all out for Obama” is about as productive as self-flagellation. That’s what got us into this mess!

  11. Toonces says:

Exactly. And in 2008 people were saying that’s what would happen, that the left/center would lay down and die just because a D was in office, and I didn’t fully believe them. Now I do. Gee, do I want Social Security privatized under Obama or Romney? Or maybe just scrapped entirely under Paul? I better choose wisely!

I think Michael Moore is right, we need Matt Damon and Ben Affleck to run as a ticket. Or Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt.

  12. Swannie says:

“Jason Melbourne had already visited four pharmacies in search of Plan B for his wife when he was referred to a CVS in Mesquite, Texas, some 15 miles away from his home. They had one box left:”
    That alone speaks volumes …

  13. Nell says:

    To whom is Obama pandering?

I would posit he is pandering to fathers of daughters – men who believe they are the owners and guardians of their daughters’ sexuality until the day they relinquish said guardianship to a new owner in the form of a husband.

In other words, men just like him.

  14. Adrienne in CA says:

What a bunch of moralizing busy-bodies we have working at drugstores in this country. Hope somebody sues CVS out of existance.

As for Obama’s role in this, I have a different first word for the title of this post, that also ends in “k.”

  15. anna says:

Do you think Mitt might pick a female running mate? If so, do you think she’ll fare any better than Palin? Word is he might pick Senator Kelly Ayotte.

  16. Ugsome says:

One woman I’ve known a long time who has impeccable radical pro-choice, women’s rights creds built up since the late 60s has thrown them all away on this antiwoman fraud of a President. It’s tragic.

  17. Gayle says:

What a bunch of moralizing busy-bodies we have working at drugstores in this country.

I was thinking the same thing.

  18. tallbacka says:

Do you think Obama might pick a female running mate? There are rumours on the internets about replacing Biden with Hillary…but perhaps that’s kinda what we call speculation

  19. Carmonn says:

It depends on how desperate he is. He’s probably going to win handily against Romney, but if he’s way, way, down I could see it. I don’t know how many votes he’d pick up at this late date, but probably a handful from people (raises hand) who’d like to at least live to see the gender barrier broken and who realize we can’t be too picky because we aren’t going to get many, if any, more chances.

  20. elliesmom says:

Carmonn, what if Romney chooses a woman to run with him? His Lt. Governor in MA was a woman so there’s some history that says he might. Would you “not be too picky” then?

  21. Sameol says:

Personally, I don’t think it will happen. Having Clinton on the ticket in 2008 could only have helped, but he refused to break the gender barrier then because a) he didn’t want to b) he’s a steaming pile of excrement and c) he knew anyone with a D after his name could win, so he didn’t have to.

Four years later, few voters will be voting for vice-president, he’s already got most of her core supporters. He’s got to worry about his own base, and there are many angry misogynists there. How many will be turned away from voting completely if they have to watch the John Kerrys and Dennis Kuciniches pretend to recognize this as a milestone? Depending on how the race shapes up, he might have more to lose than gain.

elliesmom, it’s been fairly traditional in Massachusetts to pick a female running mate for years now. That doesn’t mean he liked it. He treated her with visible contempt and disrespect, frequently. He also treated the female governor (unelected, see tendency to choose female running mates) he pushed aside to run when he wasn’t even a state resident pretty shabbily, too. If Obama’s twin conquers his “woman problem” enough to put a woman on, he, too, will need a compelling political reason to go against his own instincts. And they probably also learned that lesson in 2008. Little gain, but regardless of who it is provoke another furious frenzy from Obama supporters and the media? We’ll see.

  22. redheadedfemme says:

    Honestly, people.

Y’all are so far over the edge here, you’re coming up the backside and snapping at the teabaggers’ heels.

I hope you enjoy your new Republican overlords. Just remember, when you’re waving bye-bye to Social Security and Medicare, unions and reproductive rights, most government agencies and the rest of the economy, and kneeling in front of the throne the 1% are ruling from…both parties are exactly the same!

  23. Carmonn says:

So your argument is that if we don’t go “all out” for Democrats who hate unions, are hostile to reproductive rights, want to privatize Social Security and Medicare, worship at the Wall St. altar, disdain left approaches to the economy and constantly echo conservative rhetoric on the size and function of government, we’ll be left at the mercy of Republicans who hate unions, are hostile to reproductive rights, want to privatize Social Security and Medicare, worship at the Wall Street altar and hate government?

    This argument loses something, somewhere.

By the way, maybe it’s just me, but using “teabagger” as an insult and term of ridicule doesn’t necessarily indicicate the most gay-friendly approach to life. Again, might be just me.

  24. Toonces says:

redheadedfemme, why not hold out on your support for Obama until you get something for your vote this year? Make him work for you instead of the all-powerful Right for the next 10 months while you actually have some leverage.

This IF YOU DON’T VOTE FOR OBAMA THE WORLD WILL END stuff isn’t going to be very effective if Obama doesn’t have the vote already. Too many people see him as a Republican in the mold of Bush, so threatening with another Republican is… stupid. You’re going to have to come up with a positive incentive instead of fear and insults.

Honestly, I do not care who people vote for. I’m not going to try to convince people either way, I’m not going to waste my time arguing about it this time. There aren’t any good choices, and people should be angry about that. That’s my only point.

  25. dandelion says:

Hey redheadedfemme — thanks for reminding me what’s at stake and what I can look forward to from a candidate who 1) praised the Ryan voucher Medicare plan; 2) convened an unnecessary deficit commission headed by determined foes of Social Security and so put SS on the table; 3) froze the pay of all Federal employees and then sat out the great WI union struggle after having reneged on his support for card-check legistlation; put forth a stimulus proposal that even Larry Summers agreed was a third smaller than it needed to be then sat back on his thumbs while employment remained at what had previously been considered crisis levels for three years while developing a program to “assist” homeowners in foreclosure that only benefited banks.

I know, I know, don’t engage the paid Obamabot troll. Gee, they must be feeling a little desperate.

And oh yeah: under an ostensibly Dem president, the biggest rollback in women’s access to reproductive healthcare in a generation.

You know, some of us were on the lines fighting for that access. It’s really not enjoyable to see a decades long fight wiped out with a cheesy comment about common sense and a slick smile from someone who is supposed to be an ally.

Sorry for the long-winded post. I live in the SF bay area and am surrounded by well-off liberal Obamapologists who, thanks to Apple and Google and Schwab, all still have jobs. But I remember the days when the Dems stood for people like nurses, teachers, steelworkers — you know, the people who don’t have jobs anymore. And I’m sick of hearing how Obama is doing the best he can — from the chin-stroking considered view of the well-upholstered liberal intelligentsia of this country.

  26. Sameol says:

redheadedfemme, the problem with what you’re saying is that, not only are there an awful lot of Democrats who are functional Republicans and share all the same evil goals, there are also an awful lot of Democrats who, to use your words, don’t get worked up about anything and always want to hold off and pick some future battle where we’ll finally make our stand. In theory.

Sure, there are Republicans who’d like to overturn Griswold. But the fact that that’s now being talked about as a real possibility isn’t just the Republicans’ fault. Everytime our side fails to get worked up, each time we capitulate, each time we offer up something else in addition, we’re either failing to stop the rightward drift of our political culture, or actively enabling it. It just doesn’t stop.

  27. Violet Socks says:

Y’all are so far over the edge here, you’re coming up the backside and snapping at the teabaggers’ heels.

I don’t think I understand this comment. But I will say it’s interesting to discover someone (other than Booman) who has missed the “Obama is a Republican sellout” epiphany that everybody else had a couple of years ago. Redheadedfemme, I gather from your blog that you might be new to the progressive side of the aisle, so here’s the deal: everybody from Daily Kos to the Daily Show pretty much realizes that Obama is basically Bush III. This isn’t some cutting edge analysis here.

  28. Lily NewName says:

I cant’ say I’m glad that Obama has proved that he is a “placeholder” for the Republican Party.

I haven’t been here for a few years, in fact I haven’t paid much attention to politics since 2008 so maybe someone could catch me up. What I am surprised to see is the lack of a neo-con in the Republican candidate selection. What am I missing?
