I’m not the only one!

Last night I found myself reading an old thread at Twisty’s (why this particular thread I don’t remember; series of tubes, etc.) Anyway, I happened upon this comment by Vibrating Liz (emphasis added):

The Clarissa person appears to be a bright multilingual young academic “pro sex” fun-feminist with a prolific self-promotional blog. She has recently made it her mission to denounce various other feminist blogs, including this one. She has a tiresome affinity for false dichotomies, disingenuosity, and narcissistic bragging. I finally had to stop following the Feminist Blogs feed because her ubiquitous posts made it so goddamned annoying.

Yes! Me too!

I axed the Feminist Blogs feed earlier this year and felt guilty about it; I’d been following it since I started blogging. But I just couldn’t take any more Clarissa.

And now I know: I’m not the only one. I feel absolved.

I really don’t get how she’s a writer for Feministe. Have they not gone through her website? Most of the content could read like it’s coming from an MRA. It’s genuinely baffling.

She’s a writer for Feministe? When did that happen?

Back when I got rid of the Feminist Blogs feed, as far as I could tell Clarissa was just an obscure twit writing shit like “Why there is no such thing as male privilege” on her own tiny little blog. But she was doing it about 20 times a day, hence ruining the Feminist Blogs feed for everyone.

However, if there is any feminist blog that would have her, it’s Feministe. They have a weird history of actually inviting anti-feminists to guest blog there. Seriously, remember Renegade Evolution, the self-proclaimed anti-feminist?

I think she might be a parody. Her posts are usually as short as they are weird and obtuse. It’s always something like, “Problems with women at Occupy? Nuh uh! Sometimes they are on TV and I totally saw a woman! And most rapes aren’t stranger rapes, so there is, like, no way, that’s just wack!!” or “Some women think they’re treated worse if they don’t look a certain way, but did their boss ever tell them they weren’t promoted because they didn’t wear makeup? Case proven!”

I don’t think she’s the same person as at Feministe. I just looked it up. The Clarisse Thorn who blogs at Feministe is a “pro-BDSM activist,” which is all kinds of hilarious in its own way, but whatever. And there is a post on Clarissa’s blog where she says “I am not Clarisse Thorn who blogs at Feministe!”

    So, two different people.

I made the same mistake, I also thought they were the same person.

I read Clarisse Thorn’s Feministe post about Mr. Ambition and that was enough; it’s annoying to read about someone who expands much energy exasperating her suitors then getting out ahead of them by blogging about it first.

I am vaguely aware of Clarissa from her vigorous denunciation of Twisty.

She is a real person teaching at Southern Illinois University. I follow her for the local interest.

Long time reader, first time posting a comment. Thanks for this! I thought I was the only one who couldn’t stand her (since all her posts have a bunch of comments on them).

Anyways, it’s not her blogs that bothers me, it’s how she treats people who disagree with her either in her comments or on other blogs. To describe her as a disingenuous is a huge understatement. And she apparently has a PhD from Yale, which weirds me out. Although Yale also produced George W. Bush, so there’s that.

    Best Wishes

Thirding the confusion. Well, they’re both worth some head shaking.

  9. Sarah says:

I had the most unfortunate dialogue with her the other day. She absolutely refused to believe that female bloggers received any kind of gender-specific attacks because all her worst enemies were women, or some crap. Re: http://www.guardian.co.uk/worl.....l-trolling

AND SHE WENT TO YALE. WHHYY?

Wow, I thought I was the only one, too! I stopped putting feminist blogs syndication feed on my blog, too. She did comment something on my blog which was kind of odd because I wasn’t sure how she got that idea from the post that I’ve written.
