I think you’d have to be made of stone not to appreciate his epiphany. He went there to take slo-mo video of hot chicks beating drums, but when he got there, they were giving out food, and singing, and dancing, and walking and chewing gum at the same time, and going through the maze without being offered a banana first. Masturbatory aids were displaying qualities generally reserved only for higher primates.

Men on the right think women are private property. Men on the left think women are public property.

The bizarre thing is that Steve seems to sincerely believe he’s some kind of idealist. He’ll probably be flooded with job offers from Hollyweird before the week is up — HBO will probably want to buy his “documentary” — or he’ll end up at MegaEvilCorp’s advertising division.

    In conclusion: what a dumbfuck.

  3. tinfoil hattie says:

You are being too hard on poor Steve! He was only “joking”! And he is highlighting OWS, which needs publicity! And men are driven to photograph hawt women and post them on youtube! It’s EvoPsych 101, stoopids! And it is NOT sexist! He and his buds said so!

  4. lambert strether says:

Last I checked, anybody can enter Zucotti Park and film. So some weasel does that, hijacks the Occupy brand, and suddenly it’s “Occupy Wall Street” that’s the problem?

‘Tis better to be vile than vile esteemed. Perhaps the Occupations should just bag the progressive stack. Why not?

  5. lambert strether says:

Then again, if you want to see real issues of misogyny at an occupy GeneralAssembly, see this excellent post by The Other Elizabeff on Paulina Gonzalez’s experiences at OccupyLA (I’m linking to Corrente because the original is on Facebook which some do not use).

Of course, it’s a lot easier to (a) throw some well-worn tropes at some sleazoid who had three hits a day until we decided to help him out with his marketing plan, and (b) smear all the Occupations with a web site that hijacks the brand, rather than (c) look at any real issues in how actual Occupations (see link above) treat and mistreat women, and especially working class women (see link above).

I have great respect for Reclusive Leftist the blog, and Violet the person, but this lazy post is far below the standard.

  6. quixote says:

tinfoil hattie, yup. You should see the thread over at Corrente. Corrente. I couldn’t believe it.

  7. Toonces says:

One thing I agree with in that Corrente thread is that I don’t think this episode of misogyny should be seen as coming from OWS. This guy was all OWS? BO-RING! O WAIT! TITTIES! So… I don’t get the impression he was really down for the cause. Of course, if pro-OWS people keep defending this guy, saying it’s nothing, closing ranks around him, etc. his mentality/misogyny will be come to be associated with OWS (duh).

  8. Sameol says:

Maybe we just ought to go with it. If all of these people think that attending a protest and having close-ups of one’s body parts published on the Internet under a “hot chicks” banner for fuckability rating is flattering (and give the guy totes credit, not all the women were coventionally beautiful, but he chivalrously designated them as hot anyway!), celebratory, and designed to promote movement involvement, then cool. Go with it, and in a couple years we’ll do a headcount and see how that worked out. Demanding respect is the last refuge of puritans and ugly chicks.

  9. quixote says:

    Sameol, who you calling ugly?

The reason some of us are all “Oh crap. Not again” about sexism at OWS is because it really has started something. The blabbing by the bobbleheads even includes talk of income inequality, not just deficitdeficitdeficit-cut-cut-cut-cut.

But it’s not going to last if the d00ds don’t get shut down.

So much so that I’d assume this d00d is a Rovian plant, like the POC-want-violence nonsense a few days back. Except that liberal d00ds have shown way too many times that they don’t need any help being sexist jerks.

So some of us feel like making little hand-waving motions to try to nudge the first real movement in years off the self-destructive path. I know there’s not much hope, but you gotta give people a chance. And once we’re out of what little energy we have, then, yeah, we’ll be watching the continuing crash and burn and asking the idiots how it’s working out for them. And they won’t hear us any more than they do now.

    Toonces says:

Men on the right think women are private property. Men on the left think women are public property.

    Yup

  11. Carmonn says:

Jill’s got a new thread up about this, the guy’s searching out google images of her and making comments like “Oh, I see, dressing in a short shirt and showing off your body to leering men is totally cool only when you do it” and “Love how these guys stare as you show off your curves.”

I see a bright future for this young man in progressive politics.

  12. lambert strether says:

Unfortunateley, my comment is still in moderation, no doubt because the links.

In brief, this “link bait” headline is deceptive. The site in question has nothing to do with the Occupation known as Occupy Wall Street. Any douchebag can wander into Zucotti Park with a camera and then hijack the Occupy brand. One of the many reasons (see comments when approved) this post is unfortunate is that it reinforces that scam.

  13. Violet Socks says:

In brief, this “link bait” headline is deceptive.

Link bait? Lambert, are you out of your mind? Seriously, you need to chill. You need to go sit down somewhere and get a grip on yourself. You have “great respect” for me and my blog, except that you don’t understand it or me or how I think or my sense of humor or what I believe in or why I post. Jesus.

  14. Sameol says:

quixote, I hear you. I was just reacting to the craptacular show at Corrente. I’d like to think it’s not representative, but after laughing my way through Whirl O’Cliches and filling my bingo card at feministe, I stopped laughing when I got to Corrente. More power to anyone with that much patience.

  15. tinfoil hattie says:

Lambert, I’m sorry to say, this guy IS representative of OWS. Unless you believe that his “HAWT CHICKS PROTESTING & SHIT” happened in a vacuum, and is completely societally unrelated to the ASSAULTS and RAPES and duedebro-rape-care-instructing that’s going on ALL OVER THE COUNTRY.

You’re a dude. You don’t get it. And you don’t get to come here and whine at women who are SICK AND TIRED of this crap being our everyday, lived reality. Especially since nearly every dude responding to this crap is DEFENDING that asshat.

Not representative of OWS? “Link bait”? Lazy post? Yeah. Coming from someone who has no idea that women are drowning in this EVERY FUCKING DAY OF OUR LIVES. Lucky you, it’s not your reality, so the idea that there is a connection to OWS is! absurd! And feminists! are just too sensitive!

How’s the air up there on Mt. Male Privilege?

  16. Carmonn says:

How does anyone function between performances of Brother Lambert Ignatius Explains It All For You? Have pity, without your guidance there’s no way for us to distingush real issues from the well-worn tropes to which we so desperately cleave.

  17. quixote says:

(Just to be clear, Sameol, that “who you calling ugly?” had a grin after it. :D )

  18. Sameol says:

Oh, that part I got! (If Dr. Socks didn’t have a ban on emoticons I’d insert one here.) I was just afraid that it wasn’t clear what I was reacting to, didn’t want anyone here to feel attacked or anything.

  19. Violet Socks says:

And you don’t get to come here and whine at women who are SICK AND TIRED of this crap being our everyday, lived reality.

Oh come on, tinfoil, let’s just admit it. We don’t really care about any of that shit. Our main concerns here are posting “link bait” to get hits and damaging the Occupy “brand.”

  20. Carmonn says:

Especially since nearly every dude responding to this crap is DEFENDING that asshat.

Yeah, and not just that asshat. The reaction to the rape in Cleveland has been disgusting. The reaction to Occupy Baltimore’s “false accusations” bullshit has been disgusting. Rape apologia is loud and proud all over. But, you know, it’s not important to worry about that stuff, it’s important to keep the “honeytrap” memos in an easily accessible place and stay on message. Don’t be part of the problem.

  21. Violet Socks says:

Per Carmonn in #11, here’s the link to Jill’s follow-up post on the guy’s rape jokes, etc. Dear god but this guy is a fucktwit. And so is every guy defending him.

  22. tinfoil hattie says:

Yeah, you are all correct. Those poor men trying to maintain the sacredness of the OWS “brand” are being all hampered by hating, link-baiting feminists who can’t focus on what’s really important.

  23. Toonces says:

So there are a bunch of people defending Steve now, y’know the guy who was not a part of OWS, rather than the women who were/are a (passionate) part of OWS, in the name of defending OWS.

    Ha.

  24. Ugsome says:

This is not a lazy post. This kind of shit is an essential part of a larger process that will ensure that OWS will give us a new douchetocracy, a young crop of Tom Haydens, Bill Ayerses and Dany Cohn-Bendits. The women leaders will be shunted off into the girly ghetto where they can infight to death while the men run things. That’s my prediction and you can take that to the bank.

  25. Violet Socks says:

What the hell are you people doing up?

I was re-reading Robin Morgan’s “Goodbye to all that” (the original one, from 1970) and sighing over how much has not changed.

There’s a split among feminists between those who think men are just fucking stupid (I mean really, how hard is this?), and those who think that men understand very well how sexist and assholish they’re being and it’s all part of the plot. Oversimplifying absurdly here, but I think you all know what I mean.

I’m really not sure. I tend to think “stupidity” because, well, most people strike me as pretty goddamn stupid. To be blunt. I think I would say “stupidity” as enabled by a heavy subconscious/conscious dose of “gee, this does work out well for us doesn’t it?”

  26. Ugsome says:

I go with narcissistic. “Works for me, what’s the problem?”

    It’s daylight where I am. That’s why I’m up.

  27. parallel says:

course, if pro-OWS people keep defending this guy, saying it’s nothing, closing ranks around him, etc.

Exactly. It’s not just that one misogynistic jerk does some misogynistic jerk thing, it’s the reaction from all the supposedly “progressive” dudes who start squealing about how the uppity b*tch wimmins are just making stuff up and why can’t they get behind all the wonderful leftie men (where they belong) and just be grateful that the wonderful leftie men aren’t showing them some *real* misogyny like they deserve.

Bros before hos. Every single time.

  28. votermom says:

Men on the right think women are private property. Men on the left think women are public property.

Toonces, that is it exactly. Your comment is so true that seeing it quoted over at pumapac made me come over here to read the original in context.

  29. Ciccina says:

Some of the comments over at the Feministe thread are entertaining… I give you this excerpt:

“Wake the fuck up. It’s 2011. Second wave feminism was started because a bunch of women, much like hipsters, idolized the revolutionary movement of their parents generation, but didn’t actually have anything to protest. So all of sudden, innocuous actions were attacked, like the immune system of someone with allergies going ape shit over some peanuts. Most women that I know who are doing damn well for themselves never talk about the crap on this website. Because, like everyone else who is doing well for themselves, they WORKED THEIR ASS OFF. They didn’t sip wine at book club, complaining about what a male dominated culture we live in. Jesus Christ.”

Priceless! I *wish* I could make stuff like this up.

  30. Violet Socks says:

Oh, here’s an actual good comment from that thread:

    Katya 10.20.2011 at 12:52 pm

In case there was any doubt that SG is a douche, this from August Pollak (linked to on Pandagon):

“So, my fun little Inside Baseball story: when Campus Progress (the nonprofit I used to work for in DC) first launched in 2004, one of the first things we did was try to promote a campus tour of a small documentary film made by Steven Greenstreet. We sent him to college campuses across the country to do a Q&A with students and put him up in hotels and expensed him. The relationship went sour when we started getting expense invoices back from him with hotel bills that included charges for pornographic movies. Then he called one of my female co-workers a “F___ C___” during a phone call. And that’s the last time anyone at a major progressive organization ever worked with Steven Greenstreet again.”

But I’m sure it was just a joke.

The fucktwittery of that clown, it overwhelms me.

  31. HeroesGetMade says:

What a relief this thread is after wading through the dreck in that Corrente thread! Once again, the difference between a feminist site and a feminist-friendly site is made abundantly clear. Viva la difference, but why wade through dreck when you don’t have to?

That said, the easiest and most effective way for the Occupados to protect their rep is to shut down the Dude Nation contingent in their midst – wherever, whenever, and however it manifests. The other great benefit of shutting it down is that the movement results in real change due to thinking women being represented in the movement by thinking women. Without women being in the thick of it, it’s just going to turn into another bloody male revolution resulting in changing out the men at the top, or expanding the 1% to maybe 2%, nearly all of them, once again, men.

The progressive stack that I’ve heard so much about is a thing of beauty, no doubt. Presently, I’m using the pushback against it as an indicator of Occupy sites that are going to either fizzle out or go rogue, and take the whole movement down. Right now, I’m cautiously optimistic that Dude Nation isn’t going to turn this to shit, like every other thing that could’ve been a real game-changer.

  32. Violet Socks says:

That said, the easiest and most effective way for the Occupados to protect their rep is to shut down the Dude Nation contingent in their midst – wherever, whenever, and however it manifests.

Exactly. And this is so simple, so clear, that one has to wonder what is so goddamn complicated.

An asshole named Steven Greenstreet tries to turn #ows into a voyeuristic peep-show spank video. Feminists call him out on that fucking bullshit. If you’re a progressive pro-feminist dude, your response should be: Boo Steven Greenstreet, Yay Feminists. It’s that simple.

And some guys are doing just that, which is great. But we sure are getting a hell of a lot of Boo Feminists. First from the knuckledraggers who think peeping Tom shit is cool and feminists are all hairy prudes and Yay Steven. But then also from the types who agree that Greenstreet is definitely a douchebag, but who nevertheless somehow choose to turn their ire on the feminists. Instead of saying Yay Feminists for calling out the douchebag, it’s Boo Feminists. Boo Feminists for talking about it, sure this is an unfortunate incident but you need to SHUT UP because the brand, the brand, won’t someone think of the brand?

Yeah, somebody’s definitely damaging the brand, but it’s not the feminists.

  33. Carmonn says:

What I don’t understand is, we’re pretty much aware that even most non-knuckledraggers don’t care about anything relating to women on a fundamental level, especially when there’s a conflict with something important, which is pretty much always. Yes, fine, I get that. The default position may be shut up, sweetie, however, from a “branding” perspective, any PR person could tell them that there’s not much of a downside to creating a perception that egalitarianism isn’t just for show, that the movement is principled and truly committed to the welfare of all.

There IS a downside to once again showcasing a huge outpouring of progressive misogyny when non-knuckledraggers are a lot more concerned about “link-bait” and other forms of bullshit, there is a downside to reenforcing the perception that we don’t want to police ourselves, we want to sweep everything under the rug and anyone who brings violations to light will be regarded as a running dog police loving honeytrap sent from Grand Conspiracy HQ, and there is a downside to reenforcing the perception that all we’re dealing with is a bunch of frat boys and dirty hippies who have no idea why they’re there but are drowning in privilege and don’t care about anyone else.

From a branding perspective this is pretty much a gimme, but the reflexes can’t be overcome.

  34. Toonces says:

The Obot Misogyforce didn’t just disappear into thin air.

  35. tinfoil hattie says:

    running dog police loving honeytrap
