The Romans had nothing on us

I’ve never seen Dancing With The Stars, so this clip flabbergasted me:

Jesus Christ.

This is an actual thing. A thing in the world, that people do and other people watch.

“The uploader has not made this video available in your country.” Sounds like I dodged a bullet.

  2. anna says:

Off topic, but since I know you like to follow the British monarchy:

Have you heard they’re finally changing the law in the UK so the firstborn takes the throne even if she’s a girl:

    http://sanfrancisco.ibtimes.co.....photos.htm

Also the Saudi king has promised (for what it’s worth) to finally give women the right to vote in 2015, but you probably already heard that: http://www.guardian.co.uk/worl.....-elections

  3. Violet Socks says:

    What country are you in?

  4. Violet Socks says:

Anna, that report on the monarchy is inaccurate. Cameron’s government is putting it forward, but the change hasn’t happened yet.

  5. anna says:

When will the change be voted on/made law/whatever the next step is, do you know?

  6. Violet Socks says:

It’s in the British papers — I think Cameron has written to his buddies in the Commonwealth countries and it’s going to be discussed. Check the Guardian, the Telegraph, etc. They have the story.

  7. Violet Socks says:

I’m sorry, I want to talk about Dancing With The Stars. It’s surreal. I just learned that it’s the most popular show on TV for people over 50 or something.

I want to create a reality show called Eating Dog Food With the Stars. D-list celebrities have to wear dog costumes and get on their hands and knees and eat dog food out of a bowl. They must race to see who can finish first! And they would do it, too. And people would watch.

  8. propertius says:

Never watched DWS. I see I haven’t missed anything.

  9. Cyn says:

Good god, Violet, I have never watched it, either. I now have to go scrub my eyes and my brain. It’s loathsome.

  10. Susan says:

I like DWTS. It’s, often, very interesting although this whole Chaz Bono thing has been very weird.

  11. Violet Socks says:

He can’t dance. He has no business dancing. I don’t know if the other contestants are that bad, but the man cannot dance. That’s what’s so weird to me. (Plus all the ridiculous cheesiness and just the whole craptasticness.)

It really lays bare the dynamic of modern entertainment. Instead of watching people who can dance and listening to people who can sing, it’s all about watching semi-famous people make fools of themselves on camera.

  12. Gayle says:

    LOL! That was awesomely atrocious!!

I heard he’s scored at the very bottom from the get go. After a particularly crap-tastic performance last week, Cher stepped in via twitter and promised to come watch this week if he made it through.

What can she do to keep him in next week? Offer to dance herself?

  13. Gayle says:

Oh, and PS: I do watch DWTS (yeah, I admit it). It has been entertaining in the past and some of the dancing has been quite good.

Sadly, this season it’s hit rock bottom. I can’t watch much beyond the first few dancers it’s so boring. There are few compelling celebrities and whoever is voting is doing so for reasons other than talent. One of the few actual good dancers, a woman from The Hills, was booted last week even though she danced flawlessly: she just doesn’t have a fan base. (shrug)

It was actually fun watching Kirstie Alley defy everyone expectations last year by kicking butt even with the extra pounds. Nothing this season really holds my interest.

  14. Swannie says:

I can’t believe I watched the whole thing . I have seen a few unavoidable clips here and there , but having a been in an amateur ballet troupe , most of the time I just cringe .
I guess it is like a circus , and better than making the poor bears dance ;)

  15. Sameol says:

I’ve never watched the show, but I remember last year (or maybe the year before), tons of bloggers were incandescent with rage because Palin’s kid survived week after week. It was pretty hilarious, apparently we need stronger safeguards to ensure the integrity of the celebrity dancing voting process. I think there was also a similar show featuring celebrity ice dancing.

Someone was just telling me that they’ve just changed the law and would now allow a first-born daughter to inherit Prince Charles’ duchy, which would set up an interesting dynamic if they fail to change the laws of succession?

  16. Ciardha says:

Haven’t watched it this year, and yeah Chaz is absolutely awful from that clip.

Now, Bristol Palin wasn’t bad, her name might have kept her on, but she also earned it in my eyes by how hard she tried and improved- actually much more than the guy who made it into the finals- he got there more by a few flashy moves than any real improvement. No she was no pro, but she tried really hard and got up to fairly decent dancing ability by the time she was voted off.

I like to dance myself and know I’d never be at anything like professional level- so I usually like to watch it to see the person who really tries and improves. For some reason I haven’t been that interested this year though. Sounds like I haven’t missed anything though.

  17. Violet Socks says:

One of the few actual good dancers, a woman from The Hills, was booted last week even though she danced flawlessly: she just doesn’t have a fan base.

Really? Well, that sort of ties in with everything else, the stuff about Bristol Palin, etc. And now apparently people are voting for Chaz because they support him as a transgender person (which is fine, but he still can’t dance). Strange show; seems like it’s not a talent competition as much as a popularity contest.

But who on earth is doing the choreography? Corky St. Clair?

  18. tinfoil hattie says:

But who on earth is doing the choreography? Corky St. Clair?

    BASTARD PEOPLE!

I have never watched DWTS and only watched 1/2 of the video clip you posted, Violet. I found it vapid, insipid, and dull. Also stupid.

Chaz? Pisses me off more for his sexist remarks about how great it is to no longer be a horrible girly-girl woman than for his atrocious “dancing.”

The whole DWTS thing is just 8th grade all over again.

  19. Sweet Sue says:

I love how his poor partner has to fling herself around the stage because she’s-literally-doing all the work. She looks possessed.
I couldn’t be worse than Chaz and that’s saying something. Oh wait, at my age, I couldn’t run up those steps, so that’s something.
And tinfoil hattie, I agree with you. Watching “Becoming Chaz” was painful because I lost count of how many times he ordered his long suffering girlfriend to make him a sandwich.
    Shades of “iron my shirt.”
All that ‘tude and no pecker. Um, no.

  20. quixote says:

Bwahaha. I’ve never watched DWTS. Not even this clip. And now I don’t need brain bleach. I’m feeling pretty smug, let me tell you.

And I second tinfoil hattie: the little I’ve heard about Chaz is his sexist crap. Trying to be more royalist than the king is my guess.

Re Saudi Arabia and voting: women can only vote in municipal elections starting in 2015. No word on when it moves up the line. 2600 for provincial elections? 3000 for national? You wouldn’t want to rush into something like that.

  21. Adrienne in CA says:

Well one extra the Romans had was feeding contestants to the lions. Might not be a bad idea in this case.

  22. Gayle says:

The professional partners do the choreography. Lacey (Chaz’s partner) is responsible for that. Too bad, she’s usually really good and was the first runner up with her partner last year.

They definitely match the level of difficulty with the celebrities ability and in his case, she has to dumb it down.

I agree with the commentator above who enjoyed watching Bristol. One of the fun things about this show is watching people try and improve over the course of the season. Palin was certainly one of those contestants.

  23. lexia says:

@21 Will no one think of the poor lions?

    Snort!

  24. Carmonn says:

I don’t necessarily think it’s such a bad thing that reality-talent competitions can turn into popularity contests. The critiques can be so out-of-proportion and scathing, it probably reflects a healthy impulse to root for the underdog.

On the other hand, it might reflect a cruel desire to prolong the humiliation.

Ugh, Chaz. Embracing gender stereoytpes with abandon and glorifying consequence-free dickish behavior because that’s just how guys are. Swell.

  25. Monchichipox says:

Phhhhttt Try twirling a baton in a Danskin when you’re an early bloomer(if you know what I mean) in 6th grade. In a smelly gymnasium no less. Anyway the only time I ever watched the show was when crazy Cloris Leachman was on. She was winning one for old broads everywhere. The judges were getting so infuriated because she made it so far and the crowds loved the old lady. They were laughing with her not at her.

If you find this entertaining you really need to dig up a clip of Cloris. Oh I’ll do it for you even though I don’t know how to embed the video.

I just love old ladies who keep living even though the world wants them to go away.

  26. Violet Socks says:

Ew, why is her partner trying to peck her face at the beginning of the clip? Reminds me of Tippi Hedren in the Birds.

I watched the dance. And yeah, I see what you mean. Go, Cloris. On the other hand, it kind of looks like elder abuse. That dance is way too fast for her. Way, way, way too fast.

    What a strange show.

  27. Riverdaughter says:

Normally, I would agree with you. I have never seen DWTS in real time on TV. It just had zero appeal.
Then, a couple months ago, I stumbled on a paso doble performed by Derek Hough and Nicole Scherzinger of the Pussycat Dolls.
    Have you seen it?
Go to YouTube and search “paso doble Derek Nicole”.
    I’ll wait.

  28. Violet Socks says:

I just watched. That was excellent! If the show was always like that, it would be great. Of course, that woman can actually dance. Some people can dance, some people can’t. She can dance.

  29. Monchichipox says:

Though I’m sure most of you have probably seen it but if you haven’t check out the national dance competition that PBS shows every year. The talent is breathtaking. I get winded just watching.

There is a reality show about dancing that I can highly recommend. If you haven’t seen it check it out. It’s So You Think You can Dance. I love the kids on that show. They wear their emotions on their leg warmers and they don’t care who sees. They’re either crying like their mother just died or prancing off the stage like a smiling, waving, fawn. The way only dancers can do.

Plus the judges on SYTYCD don’t see themselves as monstrous dream crushers. I guess that’s easy when everyone who gets into the competition is talented.
