The end of male primogeniture

By · Friday, October 28th, 2011 · 9 Comments »

Hallelujah! I am so happy I have lived to see this: Girls equal in British throne succession Sons and daughters of any future UK monarch will have equal right to the throne, after Commonwealth leaders agreed to change succession laws. The leaders of the 16 Commonwealth countries where the Queen is head of state unanimously […]

The Smoking Lounge endorses Herman Cain

By · Tuesday, October 25th, 2011 · 20 Comments »

On behalf of God, Nietzsche, Raoul, Alex the African Grey Parrot, and the rest of the denizens of the Smoking Lounge, I’m happy to announce that we’ve decided to endorse Herman Cain for president. After seeing this stunningly artistic and powerful campaign ad, we really had no choice: I should like to note that we’re […]

Rapture watch

I’m sure you all know that today is the end of the world, per Harold Camping (do-over!). What I’m sure you don’t know, since I haven’t told you and none of you are ceiling cats (fingers crossed on that one), is that I’ve recently developed a strange hobby. I’ve started reading a Rapture forum. These […]

Gaddafi, as I’ll always remember him

By · Thursday, October 20th, 2011 · 6 Comments »

Enough with the dead pictures. I don’t need to see that. I’m very glad Gaddafi is no longer in power, but I get no joy from death. Instead, I prefer to remember the Colonel for the tiny rays of sunshine he brought into the lives of fashion followers everywhere. I recommend the delightful style retrospectives […]

The Occupation goes global

By · Saturday, October 15th, 2011 · 6 Comments »

Cool! It looks like the American Autumn is turning into the Global Autumn. (Which is really, really not catchy, but I digress.) Protests in Tokyo, Seoul, Taipei, Manila, Hong Kong, Rio de Janeiro, Buenos Aires, Capetown and Johannesburg, all the European capitals, all the big cities in Australia and Canada, etc. Cool.

Happy poll + hilarious parody

By · Thursday, October 13th, 2011 · 4 Comments »

Tiny shards of light today. A new poll shows that Americans favor the OccupyWallStreet thingy by a margin of two to one. They also don’t like the Tea Party. Sanity! The full poll results are here. And this affectionate parody of Elizabeth Warren (via New Deal 2.0) made me snort-laugh: P.S. Reminder: Corrente is having […]

The Romans had nothing on us

I’ve never seen Dancing With The Stars, so this clip flabbergasted me: Jesus Christ. This is an actual thing. A thing in the world, that people do and other people watch.

Annual Corrente fund drive

By · Tuesday, October 11th, 2011 · 3 Comments »

It’s kibble-buying time for the hamsters over at Corrente! Please go pitch in if you can. Times are hard, but the only way we’ll have a progressive media and honest blogging community is if we support it. (And on a personal note, lambert and the other Correntians have been extremely helpful to me whenever I’ve […]

Occupy Wall Street

By · Saturday, October 8th, 2011 · 3 Comments »

I’m getting up to speed on the world after being out of commission for a couple of weeks. The most interesting news is the Occupy Wall Street movement. I feel a little like Lenin in 1917: “Shit, you mean it’s already happening??? To the Batmobile!” Of course I’m in no condition to foment rebellion, or […]
