Convenient audiovisual demonstration of the difference between sexism on the right and sexism on the left

Guys on the right created this mind-bogglingly offensive political ad:

Guys on the left can’t figure out what’s wrong with it:

Oh, the ad is racist all right. Wildly, incredibly, horrifically racist. But there’s something else going on there too, guys. Really. Think a little harder; maybe it’ll come to you.

Post-feminism sure is a hoot, huh?

  2. Sameol says:

I love the blank eyed stares of progressive dudes at any time of day. They’re probably debating if it’s too soon to ask the songwriter for the rights to “Give us your vote, bitch! Give us your cash, ho!” for next year’s crop of campaign ads.

  3. Three Wickets says:

Yeah no, I doubt the Obot feminists will figure out the ad is also sexist. They might even dig it.

  4. Cleaver says:

@ Three Wickets: Heh. Are we seeing the prototype of a follow-up to “Crush On Obama”?

  5. angie says:

    Don’t hold your breath waiting for them to realize the ad is sexist — heck, if you told them that they’d treat you like a moronic prudish man-hater. The faceless woman shaking her a$$ is “empowering” herself, dontchano.{rolls eyes}

Btw, I thought that little green football site was conservative. Learn something new everyday.

It used to be. Then he switched sides.

  7. ugsome says:

Max Read at Gawker got hit over the head by the clue bat by his readers and he’s sounding a bit sore about it, judging by his snarky addendum:

“Finally, we’ll also note, as several commenters have pointed out, that “Give Us Your Cash, Bitch” is Also The Most Sexist Campaign Ad Ever Made, and, obviously, we wouldn’t want to diminish the incredible misogyny on display by focusing only on the racial bigotry!”

  8. ugsome says:

LGF switched sides? Be VERY afraid. Markos and Huffington used to ‘Publicans too.

  9. madamab says:

@7 – Oh, heaven forbid anyone should prioritize sexism over racism!

  10. Janice says:

These guys know it’s extremely sexist, they just won’t admit unless forced. That’s what the 2008 primaries did, encouraged guys to be hateful of women and then deny at all costs.

  11. tinfoil hattie says:

    I f-ing hate men.

There. I said it. So sue me.

  12. Sameol says:

I feel incredibly validated by Max Reed. Clearly, he gets it!/snark

  13. ugsome says:

tinfoil, the way things have been going, I feel more and more the same way.

Hmm. The only references I can find to “Turn Right USA” is references to this ad.

According to whois, turnrightusa.org was registered just a week ago, on June 6, 2011 and is owned by somebody registered in Pennsylvania.

    http://www.whois.net/whois/turnrightusa.org

The ad is so ridiculously over-the-top I’m guessing it’s a “false flag” operation, i.e. a Dem pretending to be a nut-case Repub in order to make the GOP look bad. (Not that they need any help in that department…)

  16. tinfoil hattie says:

    Cleaver, LOL!

  17. tinfoil hattie says:

Okay, I don’t hate men anymore. I showed my 14 y.o. the video, and I said, “What’s wrong with this video?”

In his best sarcastic feminist voice, he said: “Oh, wait. I know. It’s racist.”

  18. Carmonn says:

So your son will be 15 next year, then, tinfoil hattie? And he would be eligible to run for President 5 terms from now? Sounds like a plan.

  19. Mary Tracy says:

Violet, you are amazing. You simply rock.

    That’s all.

  20. votermom says:

That video makes me want to mainline prozac.

  21. okasha skatsi says:

Sexist, racist, also just incredibly badly done.

Any fool stupid enough to pay for that thing deerves to lose.

RMc, the ad was made by Ladd Ehlinger, Jr., as all the posts I linked to explain. He’s an old hand, not some secret new person.

  23. lambert strether says:

C’mon, Violet! Where’s your sense of humor?

  24. Violet Socks says:

What I would like to see, actually, is for pro-feminist men on the left to lay the hammer down on these assholes. And I know there are pro-feminist men on the left. So why don’t they take it seriously enough to exert some peer pressure? If an alleged “progressive” engages in racism or gay-bashing, he pretty quickly gets schooled on it. But it’s rare to see men on the left sharply criticize their brethren for being sexists.

Of the three posts I linked to, only Max Read at Gawker has updated his post to address sexism. Good for him. Charles Johnson continues to ignore it completely, as do his 500 or so commenters. Apparently sexism just doesn’t exist in LGF world. And at No More Mister Nice Blog, Steve M. has actually doubled down, insulting women in the comments and bringing on his men-pretending-to-be-women sockpuppet friends from rumproast to ridicule feminists. (Of course rumproast/NMMNB do that all the time, which just raises the question: why are they still considered progressive blogs?)

  26. Cleaver says:

Yesterday at TalkLeft, BTD actually made sexism the topic of a whole post, and then he called out a couple of men for their sexism in the comments. Net result: the sexist male commenters used up most of a thread whining about and insulting the women commenters in that thread who agreed with BTD.

  27. Sameol says:

BTD could have done a better job on that thread, IMO. Granted, it is exhausting attempting to communicate with guys who say “WHAT? You think Bill Maher is SEXIST? Seriously?” and “WHAT? You think suggesting that ‘the milf factor’ is responsible for her political career is sexist? Seriously?” but welcome to our world. Let him constantly reinvent the wheel and patiently explain the same very simple ideas over and over and over for a change while we take a nap. “It is astonishing that you do not see how sexist you are,” while very true, wasn’t cutting it.

  28. HeroesGetMade says:

What I would like to see, actually, is for pro-feminist men on the left to lay the hammer down on these assholes. And I know there are pro-feminist men on the left. So why don’t they take it seriously enough to exert some peer pressure?

This is the $64 million question, isn’t it? I think it has the same answer as, “Why do gendered discussions always result in the wake of a high profile sexual assault on a woman?” Remember the online ugliness that ensued after Lara Logan was assaulted? The thing I kept seeing over and over again from various men of all political persuasions was a total and complete lack of empathy for something they were damned sure would never happen to them. And somehow because they can’t relate at all to a woman’s experience of male brutality, they identify with the perp, in all manner of unintentionally revealing ways. They minimize or deny what the perp did to the woman, or manufacture bizarre mansplanations for why she actually deserved what the perp did to her. It’s beyond amazing.

Guys on the left, they’re the absolute worst; they think being on the left means they own feminism. They’ll mansplain what it is, how you’re doing it wrong, and finish by telling you all about how they would be an ally in the good feminist fight, but they just can’t because mean feminists say things about men that offend them (because they identify with the perps). They would be an ally, but their feelings are hurt! Or else they’re trying to barter doing the right thing in exchange for you doing something onerous or something you have no interest in. Kinda like men in your household promising to do some small fraction of the household chores if you’ll hand over sexual favors first.

I actually observed the bartering thing during the election at Echidne’s place with one of her guest posters. He actually posted promising to call out Obotic misogyny if the feminists would all promise to vote for Obama like good little girls. When I called him on it, he was so offended because he was gay! The sexual orientation throwdown was somehow meant to chasten me, but I was too thick to be duly chastened. I still don’t get it, but do prefer to deal (if I must deal at all) with the right side of Dude Nation that’s more upfront about believing in the male superiority myth. In the end, a majority of men are members of Dude Nation, and every last member of Dude Nation buys into the male superiority myth. Of course, Dude Nation exiles anyone who lays the hammer down on sexism/misogyny, and what’s more important – being in Dude Nation, or female human rights? Who needs a drink?

    Good point.

    @HGM:

Guys on the left, they’re the absolute worst; they think being on the left means they own feminism.

Seriously. But if they’re members of Dude Nation, they are by definition not on the left.

  30. Carmonn says:

This post that Dr. Socks linked to is great, but the comment thread is a good illustration of the leftist man “thing.”

    http://sherrytalksback.wordpre.....r-scandal/

These guys embrace every right-wing cliche in the book from “pathologizing conventional male behavior” (because radicalism is about fetishizing the status quo?) onward. On any other topic from foreign policy to the environment, they’re playing “more leftist than thou,” but the next minute they’re advising Weiner to hire a prostitute–what better way to make sure he’ll get everything he wants just the way he wants it? Hooray, capitalism isn’t all bad after all! Although commodifying a woman’s body is lamentably expensive.

    It’s a complete joke.

Identity politics priorities for Obot progressive men:

    1. Racism (Obama first, then blacks)
    2. Homophobia
    3. Islamophobia

    Big drop to next tier:

    4. Racism (hispanics, native americans, asians)
    5. Sexism
    6. Ageism

    Barely on list:

    7. Poor bashing (trailer trash, etc)
    8. Anti-semitism

  32. ugsome says:

Guys on the left, they’re the absolute worst; they think being on the left means they own feminism.

    They really are.

    RANT ON
Let’s review my personal life, 2008. One longtime friend turned Obot trolled my Facebook page thinking he’s a daring little provocateur, and insisted that there was no sexism at all during the campaign. My Obot brother turned out to be a total rape apologist during the Roman Polanski affair (Why not drag in every member of Led Zeppelin while you’re at it? YEAH, GOOD IDEA, ACTUALLY.) My ex, the hyperprivileged liberal white-guilt 70s Keith-Olbermann generation dude, was absolutely played like a piano by the Obama campaign, but when I said that The Erstwhile GOP VP Candidate Who Shall Go Nameless had a certain raw political talent, he said that as a Hillary voter *I* was being manipulated. Thank Goddess my father passed on years ago so I may preserve a happy memory of him because that would’ve gotten ugly too.

All my life I have been putting up with more than sexism, it is flat out don’t-touch-my-divine-right-to-fukk-chixx, I-get-everything-my-mommy-gave-me-plus-your-entire-paycheck-too woman-hatred from these condescending self-righteous Democracy-Now fanboy turds.

I hate these guys with the heat of a thousand suns and for a damned good reason too.

    RANT OFF

  33. tinfoil hattie says:

Ugsome wins the Pillsbury Rant-off. WOW!

HeroesGetMade, funny you should mention: there’s an uproar right now at echidne’s because that very same guest blogger wrote a post mansplaining how it was absolutely not possible that Sugar Ray Leonard was sexually assaulted when he was 20. Many readers took him to task for it. It got ugly very fast.

I’m tired of lefty men. Just really, really tired of them and their DudeNation ways.

Also, I’m sorry to say, but my 14 y.o. refuses to run for president in 20 years. Maybe if I had a daughter, I could convince her!

  34. ugsome says:

Why thank you Hattie, I made that rant from my mother’s secret recipe, handed down from mother to daughter for generations, tucked in the family’s tattered copy of ‘The Second Sex.’

The real killer with these guys is in their utter arrogance they can never, in their own minds, make a political blunder. Never. If they drive away a large chunk of their electorate, it’s that group’s fault. They’re just too stupid to know their own interests.

Should the GOP, smelling an opportunity to pick up votes, nominate another woman to their ticket and should a mass female defection to that ticket result, they’ll blame the women, calling those voters dumb broads. They’ll never reflect “Jeez, we called a large portion of the electorate the dry-pussy brigade, maybe that’s why they stopped voting for our candidates!” The world really does revolve around them and the “little progressives” in their pants.

  35. Delphyne says:

I love that sentence – and your rant, ugsome!

  36. paper doll says:

Nothing new here. Guys on the left hated the women next to them in the 1960′s Vietnam peace movement…and it created the 70′s feminist movement…they are pathetic…they have to put down women in the most brutal fashion in order to feel unafraid for two minutes. It makes every word about their supposed causes coming out of their mouths a lie. If they had anything between their ears and legs, they would not need to do it…

  37. Sweet Sue says:

HeroesGetMade and ugsome, you, both are on fire!
And you’ve really hit the nail.
Males identify with the perp and refuse to indentfy with and have empathy for the female victim, because to do so would be a cockblock and nothing, but nothing, must block the cock.

  38. tinfoil hattie says:

Yep, ugsome – you’re right. If we vote for a woman deemed too stupid/right wing/unfuckable by Dude Nation, it will just go to show how you can’t trust us stoopid bitchezzz. It won’t show any of them what happens when you systematically tear down the best presidential candidate in decades, in favor of the Dude.

    It’s always our fault. Always.

  39. Branjor says:

But if women were to grab power, it wouldn’t matter if they trusted us “stoopid bitchezzz” or not.
    Who the hell cares?

  40. Carmonn says:

Maybe if I had a daughter, I could convince her!

Yeah, but that would be an exercise in futility.

It makes every word about their supposed causes coming out of their mouths a lie.

Yep, and they don’t care to understand why. I felt like going on Sherry’s thread and suggesting they rethink their position on refugee camps, think of the possibilities for sexual exploitation they’re missing out on.

  41. Ugsome says:

An ex-friend of mine just posted to his FB status that the Weiner scandal was a “non-issue.” He’s a middle American dad of an elementary school age daughter. Hey, when a Congressman sends cock pictures to your daughter before she’s out of high school, let me know what a non-issue that is. Hypocrite.

  42. Sameol says:

What’s hilarious is that when Howard Stern’s guy heckled Weiner during his press conference, the press corps gasped and then assured Weiner that he wasn’t one of them. When the shoe’s on the other foot and Weiner’s being asked embarassing sexual questions and subjected to an undignified frat house atmosphere, all of a sudden it is a big deal and everybody becomes a shrinking violet.

  43. HeroesGetMade says:

What a great rant, Ugsome, but how awful to live it. It’s especially hard when the Y chromosomes in your own family turn on you. All in all, I’ve been mostly lucky not having to deal with that on top of former so-called friends. I have a brother whose worst nightmare is waking up and finding She Who Must Not Be Named is president. He never says this to me directly, of course, because he knows better, and besides, who else is gonna try to round up the cure for his cancer in their extensive spare time? Oh well, he’s blood and I love him still, and at least he’s not as bad off as this fauxgressive wanker over at Counterpunch. Why these guys don’t just have done with the projection, and send her a dick pic already, I’ll never know.

Interesting, tinfoil hattie, that the mansplainer is still ensconced over at Echidne’s and mansplaining away. That post sounds interesting in a trainwreck kind of way, but I think that post during the election was my first and last of him. I still love Echidne’s posts, though. Also, our boy-children would probably get along; mine just turned 15 and learned very quickly during the election, whenever I started to enlarge upon any feminist precepts, to shout “Racist!” at me. Of course, in proper parental fashion I would then shout “Oaf!” at him and slap him upside the head. This confused his skater friends no end when it occurred in their presence, until he educated them on various feminist precepts and warned them not to do any oafish things in my presence, or his racist mother might slap them upside their heads, too. My brother with the recurring presidential election nightmare refers to this parental dynamic as “psychological warfare”. Maybe, or maybe he should’ve voted racist like me for the entirely dickless ticket; I sleep like a baby.

  44. Sameol says:

Man, that Counterpunch piece sounds like the overheated rantings of a 12-year-old, so of course it was written by a political science professor. I wonder what it’s like to be a female political science major/department member in the post-2008, back to the 50′s era. The genie’s been let out of the bottle and I bet it’s not fun. God, in addition to writing a love letter to Obama, who he claims to hate just as much as Palin (well, his politics are equally reactionary, sure, but he’s so responsible and highly intelligent and extremely measured and so mature and he exudes such gravitas–while her syntax has deeply embedded secret evil messages that he’d untangle if he were a linguist) he actually is forced to defend Mitt Romney? Oh sure, he hates Romney too, but the abomination in the dress is so catty, and like, totally stepped on his announcement and made a dig at him, and it’s the ugliest thing ever seen in American politics, ever, and, like, Joe McCarthy is totally weeping at how this nothingburger has destroyed our politics, and–

Yeah, I don’t think I’d like to be one of this guy’s students.

  45. m Andrea says:

The last thing het women will ever do is cop to their male supremacy. Seriously, would you accept a boyfriend or husband who is racist? No, but apparently a sexist man is just fine.

Anyway, half the crap thrown at Anthony was because of their internalized male supremacy and then all the high school mean girls run all over town bad-mouthing him.
