Thanks for sharing. Wonderfully human and sane reaction.

  2. votermom says:

By the way, can I shill for a post I wrote today on corrente, about the whole “discourse” thing?

  3. Teresa says:

Jon Stewart himself is frequently part of the problem. But that night, he was right.

    My favorite points he made.

You can’t outhink a crazy person. Crazy will find a way. (all this talk of how gun control would have solved the problem, etc. don’t make sense. He would have found his glock anyway…My personal editorial is that maybe he’d have robbed Gifford’s house to get it? Getting Loughner help when the red flags were flying would have been the only approach that could have prevented this.)

Wouldn’t it be nice if the ramblings of crazy people didn’t match the crazy political rhetoric on TV. Let’s tone down the rhetoric to at least make crazy people easier to spot.

  4. Violet Socks says:

    Really? Guns don’t facilitate violence?

Well, gosh, what do you need them for then? Great! We’ll take them all away, and you won’t be missing anything. Everybody will be happy.

  5. Teresa says:

Are you talking about me? I never said such a thing. All I said is crazy will find a way…repeating Mr. Stewart. Maybe you should watch Mr. Stewart again….

  6. Boner Killer says:

He’s well spoken, dreamy and generally awesome!

  7. Violet Socks says:

Teresa, I was responding to this:

(all this talk of how gun control would have solved the problem, etc. don’t make sense. He would have found his glock anyway…My personal editorial is that maybe he’d have robbed Gifford’s house to get it? Getting Loughner help when the red flags were flying would have been the only approach that could have prevented this.)

I think gun control would very definitely help. We would all be a hell of a lot safer if Glocks were harder to get.

  8. JeanLouise says:

I do think that a mentally disturbed peron who wants a gun will find one eventually. That’s no reason not to make it more difficult for him with good gun control laws.

  9. tinfoil hattie says:

A dudebro is a dudebro is a dudebro. Also, “crazy”? – Really unfair way to talk about what has happened. Lots and lots and lots and LOTS of so-called “crazy” people (in fact, MOST “crazies”) NEVER KILL ANYONE.

  10. Loretta says:

I don’t get to watch John Stewart much these days, so this was a treat. I liked John Oliver’s jammies!

  11. cellocat says:

Just because we can’t prevent ALL reckless/unstable/criminal/violent people from getting their hands on guns, doesn’t mean we shouldn’t try to prevent some people from getting their hands on guns.

  12. quixote says:

The sanest societies I know, Dutch, Swedes, Norwegians, Danes, and — top of the heap — the Icelanders, certainly have their occasional crazies who kill people.

But the frequency tells us something, no?

Once in decades. Versus here: every couple of years, it seems.

And since we’re all the same species, it’s not human nature that’s different. The fact that some countries do better is evidence — not just theory — evidence that it doesn’t have to be this way.

Jon’s speech was excellent, and maybe adding in “We can be idiots” wouldn’t have fit the tone. But until people start taking that on board, Jon will be giving that speech every couple of years.

  13. quixote says:

(I see Bob Herbert feels the same way about the “We’re idiots” part. He says it a lot better, of course.)

  14. sam says:

Herbert’s essay reminds me, with disappointment and sadness, of the ending from Caryatis Cardea’s poem “Separatist”:

    the domination of children
    a necessity of power
    the slavery of womyn
    a deep and primal desire
    confinement intimidation genocide
    starvation rape torture incest terror
    pain poison terror rape
    rape
and we scream in the night
and we agonize in the day
    who has done these things

and i say to my sisters
    men are destroying the world
    and my sisters say
    no
    there are institutions
    beliefs and prejudices
    we must struggle to erase
    we can stop their institutions
    but we need not confront
    the ones who built them
    and want them
    and profit from them
    and rebuild them
    and rebuild them
and rebuild them on our bodies

    but no
    my sisters say
    it is not
    men
    not men
    not
    men
    and i say
    to my sisters
    but it is

  15. djmm says:

John Stewart’s speech was great. (We have picked worse presidents.) John Oliver looked adorable in the jammies.

Why can’t we go back to the Brady bill restrictions on assault guns? And few people need clips that can shoot 30 or so at a time.

Joseph at Cannonfire traces the degeneration of treatment for the mentally ill:

  16. tinfoil hattie says:

Yeah, I’ve gotta go with Caryatis.

  17. a little night musing says:

I’m glad you embedded this, because I would have missed it otherwise. Thanks. I don’t love each and every thing he does, but when he is good he is very, very good.

  18. Swannie says:

One good speech , does not make a president . Sorry Violet , but while I appreciate what he said “this time”; he has too many times and far too often been a shill for B.O. ; and the things he has said about Hillary and Sarah have been inexcusable.

  19. Swannie says:

    in moderation somehow …

  20. Connie says:

I’m with you, Violet. I love Jon. He may not be perfect, but he’s sure close to it. This bit was spot on.

Rachel Maddow had stats that the U.S. is the most armed country in the world, 90 guns for every hundred people. Yemen is next with 60 guns per 100 people. Made me think. And the multi-round clips are flying off the shelves, especially in Arizona. For what purpose? An invasion of 100s of rats? Seriously.

  21. Grace says:

On the subject of mental illness, it makes me cringe each time people refer to those who suffer from it as either crazies, madmen, lunatics, or even worse, psychos, wackos, etc.

Mental illness is a disease that so far medical science has defined as a chemical inbalance of the brain. And therefore, its management or cure relies on the use of psychotropics, and in some cases electroshock therapy. Let’s stop the stigmatization and demonization of mentally ill people so that they or their families, unlike what happened with this guy, will access medical and psychological help in the future.

It’s interesting that one almost never hears people who have illnesses such as diabetes, hypertension, or lyme disease, to be called derogatory or shaming names, perhaps with the exception of epilepsia.

We are living in the 21st century, not the Middle ages, but sometimes it’s hard to tell the difference.

  22. Ciccina says:

I’m with you, Grace, but to be fair, I don’t think mental illness is singled out for shaming language. If your disease or disability is associated with deformity, dementia, cognitive challenges, learning disability, weight gain, weight loss, tallness, shortness, unibrow, you name it – there’s shaming and stigmatizing language for it.

    Sigh.

  23. Grace says:

You have a point,Ciccina.I guess it’s all part of human nature and the way many societies as a whole (including ours) deal with people who do not fit into a mold considered “normal,” which doesn’t necessarily mean healthy or sane. In other words. if you are not “normal” you are screwed, unless someone cares enough to give you a hand.

Ah…and what is considered normal today, may not be so 5 or 10 years from now, like the “ideal” weight, height, the thickness of one’s brows, or the size of one’s breasts, for that matter.

  24. Loretta says:

You are so right, Grace. Or, even, what was considered normal thirty years ago is not now as I am, unfortunately, bumping up against everyday, it seems, these days! “The times, they are a-changin.”

  25. Teresainpa says:

I think there is some confusion here about “Glocks”. They are simply another brand like Sigs or Remingtons etc… nothing particularly more dangerous about a Glock. All kinds of hand guns have clips that hold more bullets. All kinds of hand guns have semi automatic capability.

ps… and if you carry a gun for self defense, having a clip that holds more ammo is an advantage. Most people are not hording these guns with the idea that they can go out and shoot up a lot more people for crazy reasons. Gun owners like guns, the better engineered a gun is the better they like it. It’s kind of like people who love cars. No one NEEDS to go 180 miles per hour, but that doesn’t stop people from wanting high performance autos.
