Froggies

Per MSNBC, this is from the online manifesto posted by the Discovery Channel gunman:

“Nothing is more important than saving … the Lions, Tigers, Giraffes, Elephants, Froggies, Turtles, Apes, Raccoons, Beetles, Ants, Sharks, Bears, and, of course, the Squirrels. The humans? The planet does not need humans.”

The word “froggies” fascinates me in the context. (And, of course, the Squirrels.)

    “…Turtles, Apes, Raccoons,…”

    I’m an Ape.

Alex Jones is probably having a field day with this. He rants about environmentalism being rooted in hatred of humans. Now this loony bastard can be held up as proof.

If it weren’t for the context those words became known from, I would have sworn the screed was an attempt at satire, especially with that list.

This stuff never really makes sense and it’s the kind of thing you hear from MRI’s all the time; it wreaks of “but what about the men” when you’re talking about saving women -from men-. Environmentalists are talking about saving the environment -from humans-, from human action. And then some guy goes “but what about the humans?” “why aren’t we saving the humans.” The thing is, the two go hand in hand. Imperialism, unrestrained human colonization threatens the very eco-system upon which humans -rely-. But why should anyone have to explain this. Isn’t obvious to where people don’t say dumb sh(t like the above? Shouldn’t it be, rather?

Yeah, the planet doesn’t need MEN Captain Environment. It’s not women raping the earth. Surprise!

  8. DancingOpossum says:

Sandra S., the red squirrel is endangered.

Personally, I’m with the whackaloon, except for the advocating violence thing. Humans are a big problem for the planet and the fewer of them the better.

“It’s not women raping the earth.”

Actually, it is. We all are, to varying degrees, raping the earth. Nobody goes scot-free in this one. I try to leave as small a footprint as I possibly can in my life (and it’s way smaller than most folks), and it’s hard, yet I still feel rotten about how little I’m doing. But a lot of people don’t give a good flying damn and won’t make even the most minimal effort, and feel thoroughly justified in savaging the earth and its critters for their personal comfort (or to have a pretty lawn). This problem is not gender specific. It’s human specific.

I’m going to go out and plug some frogs.
