Happy Mother’s Day!

That’s the title of every other blog post over there in my live blogroll feed, and I am nothing if not a conformist. So: Happy Mother’s Day!

Alas, I’ve been too busy celebrating Mother’s Day to actually write a post. In fact, right now I have to go bake my mother a peach cobbler (her dessert request).

Fortunately, the EVE blog has provided something to talk about with their list of 100 Great American Women. It’s an interesting list of names. What do you think?

I was more than a little surprised that Betty Friedan was left off the list.

It was pretty heavy on modern women and women everybody already knows about. Not that Rosa Parks doesn’t deserve to be there, but I would like to have seen some more women who are unjustly obscure, like Clara Lemlich, Ernestine Rose, Elizabeth Gurley Flynn, and Mary Harris “Mother” Jones.

It’s a strange list. I think the effort to include so many living women kind of skewed the results.
