Virtue and Moir take the gold medal in ice dancing.

I’m here, I’m at my computer, but I’m extremely busy. So no post; just this lousy open thread.

The figure skating has been absolutely glorious this year. Kim Yu-Na is God. Virtue and Moir are the King and Queen of the Universe. Johnny Weir is the Grand Duke of Cool.

It’s just a good start to a good year. 2009 was easily the worst year of my life. I swore I would do all I could to make this one better. This wonderful Olympics was a great start.

The Olympics and a new Sade CD in the same month. If that’s not a good omen I don’t know what is.

Astonishingly, I’d never heard of Johnny Weir before this year, and I had to look him up the first time I caught a reference (not at your place, even).

I have got to get out more.

    Oh, and what monchichipox said.

I hate when the skating is full of people falling down. I can’t watch that with out feeling terrible. So this has been a very good Olympics because there has been very little falling down on the ice.

ps…. what ever happened to Michelle Kwan? Did she move to another country and change her name?

  5. Swannie says:

    definitely

    what monchichipox said

… the only thing better would be if someone did a skating routine to SADE music …..can you picture it?

    A few fashion observations. :)

When I first noticed a Swedish, middle aged, male coach wearing a crocheted hat in yellow and blue, I thought: How neat! His wife probably made him that! - Then it turned out that it was part of the official Swedish team’s outfit. I absolutely love it - and so, it seems, does half of Sweden, as instructions of DIY are sprouting everywhere! ;)

Then there are the pants of the Norwegian men’s curling team. Erases any suspicion you might have had about Norwegians not having a great sense of humour! And guts too.

And at the curling victory ceremony the young women presenting the flowers and the medals wore the most awesome coats, dark grey, knitted in what must have been jumbo yarn and ginormous needles.

Speaking of the medals I have gone from at first sight finding them somewhat too modern to finding them truly beautiful. Great pieces of art/handicraft.

Virtue and Moir are the two most beautiful human beings I’ve ever seen-and to Mahler!

Michelle’s retired from skating and is a graduate student at the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy at Tufts University. In 2006, she was appointed as a sort of goodwill ambassador by Condoleeza Rice. It’s an unpaid position and basically she travels to foreign countries to promote America. She’s continued this activity for the Obama administration. And yes, she has met Secretary Clinton!

Another rant to add to your I hate NBC post Violet, the prime time coverage of women’s events was pathetic compared to their coverage of men’s events, there were nights- like last night where not even one women’s competitive event was shown- even on tape delay like they did with the men’s speed skating. It’s been a disgusting display of misogyny, as per usual with NBC.

I found one exception to the poor women’s coverage - women’s hockey. Cammi Granato, a former U.S. player, provided intelligent commentary, speaking knowlegeably of various countries’ programs and teams, and giving credit to all players who warranted it regardless of their team’s overall performance - particularly the stellar goalies on the outmatched Chinese and Slovakian teams.

It was a far cry from the crappy men’s coverage, which picks a star player from each team for constant fawning. And the constant yelling! I finally turned the game off to clear my headache. I’ll catch periodic updates, but can’t handle listening to the whole thing. Makes me suspect NBC needs drug testing for certain announcers.

BTW, I tbought the Canadian women’s celebration was a hoot, though it probably wasn’t the smartest move to have it out on the ice knowing what fussbudgets the IOC is. Especially when the idiotic IOC is contemplating dropping women’s hockey from the 2014 games. Don’t want to take focus away from mass appeal sports like biathalon, I guess.
