Emergency blegging, Great Depression edition

By Violet Socks · Saturday, December 5th, 2009 ·

This is a purely personal request, nothing to do with fundraising or anything like that. If you’ve ever thought about throwing a few bucks in the tip jar, this would be an excellent time. I’ve been stiffed by a client on a major invoice and am in deep shit. (Merry Christmas!) Why is this happening? Because the client is, in turn, flat broke and defaulting on all their debts. And why are they flat broke? Because their business is gone. Long story short — and believe me, I know all about doing what I can to collect — there is no money. So sorry. Talk to the hand.

This is all very understandable — I’m sure there are a million stories out there just like it right now — but how in the hell do I pay my bills? I’m scrounging around like a chicken, but we’re not exactly floating in cash down here.

If you’re broke too or in debt or whatever, please just ignore this. In fact, I hope I can send you money someday. But if you’re flush and have a couple of bucks to spare, this would be a lovely, lovely time for a little Christmas gift to me and the rest of my imaginary friends here in the Smoking Lounge.

Thank you so very, very much.

Is there a way to pay by check or money order?

  2. Violet says:

Hi, Ellis — thanks so much. You can use a check with PayPal.

  3. anniethena says:

So sorry to hear you’re having trouble especially right before Xmas. Just sent a little something ( the exchange rate isn’t too bad right now).
I really appreciate the lack of ads here and hope things work out for you personal situation soon.

  4. Violet says:

Thank you so much, anniethena. I really appreciate that. Well, Christmas is homemade this year, that’s for sure. I’m mostly just figuring out how to keep my health insurance from being cancelled. It’s the shittiest policy in the world, but I’ve got to hang on to it because of my situation.

I’ve never seen things as tight as they are right now. Where I live, it’s a Depression. And this domino effect is just killing freelancers and small business people. No cushion.

  5. anniethena says:

My husband is a small business owner (mechanical engineering consulting) - he’s very good at what he does and has such a good reputation that he has the luxury of turning down some work.
Shortly after we got married, he was in a business partnership that went under (the recession that started under Bush I); good thing I was employed at the time or we would have been in serious trouble. At least we don’t have to worry about health care costs ( although my prescriptions sure add up!).
If we lived in the US my relatively minor health problems might have bankrupted us by now, as I’m sure I would have been kicked off any insurance plan for pre-existing conditions.

  6. anniethena says:

Weird, I just posted a response but didn’t even get a “your comment is awaiting moderation”.
I’ll skip what I said but just wish you lots of luck.

  7. Jadzia says:

Done. Thank you for all you do.

  8. Violet says:

anniethena, for some reason Akismet (the external spam filter) decided your last comment was spam. The false positives keep life interesting. I fished you out! Thanks again.

Jadzia, thank you so much very much. I really appreciate that.

  9. janicen says:

Just tossed my two cents worth into the kitty. Thank you for keeping me sane.

  10. janicen says:

    Help! I’m in moderation he11!

  11. Violet says:

The filters are going nuts! I swear I haven’t changed anything. It’s basically a HAL situation.

    Thank you, janicen.

  12. bluelyon says:

I tossed some shekels into the pot as well. Hope it helps.

  13. bluelyon says:

    I’m stuck too.

  14. cwaltz says:

It isn’t much but I don’t have a whole bunch in paypal. I’ll try to remember to toss a few more bucks your way later on in the week too. How much do you need to raise to be able to pay for your health insurance if you don’t mind my asking?

  15. bluelady says:

Here’s something to wish you a Merry Christmas-
    Carry on…..

  16. cellocat says:

Done. Not a lot to spare at the moment, but happy to share…

  17. ugsome says:

Done. Thanks for all you do.

  18. Violet says:

Lord, you people are so sweet. If I weren’t a mean old feminazi bitch I think I’d cry.

  19. Mec says:

    I’m in.

  20. Cyn says:

It ain’t much, ’cause there ain’t much in the sock, but sister, I can spare a dime.

If I hit the lottery, you’ll be the first beneficiary of my new found luck.

  21. Cyn says:

Hey, this is the first money I’ve donated to anyone since Hillary! Violet, you just made my day. I feel great about working with another fabulous woman. I, my dear, am thanking you. For being you.

  22. ugsome says:

Making mean old feminazi bitches cry is what gives our lives meaning :D

  23. Donald W. Paulus says:

I second what ugsome says about making mean old bitches cry especially ones that believe in reincarnation, particle accelerators and atavars of all types. Without doubt we crossed paths in several of our past lives; I wonder which ones it was. By chance, Lady Violet, do you live anywhere near Faber, VA and the home of the Monroe Institute (TMI)? You know where they do OBE’s (Out of body experiences), remote viewing plus other assorted psychic stuff?

  24. octogalore says:

    Happy to help.

If I can beg your indulgence in return, can you check my math on this problem?

  25. Chiara says:

This lurker has learned a lot from you, and if nothing else the pictures of Yul Brynner are worth a nice tip.

  26. Violet says:

Thank you so much everyone. It means so much to me.

My email is down right now (that happens sometimes out here in the country) so I have several thank-yous sitting in the outbox. Will try to send them again tomorrow!

  27. Violet says:

Octogalore, your math is right — but that’s assuming the president means what he says or really cares about anything in particular. He just wants a gold star by his name. He wants to be liked. He’s Willy Loman.

  28. tinfoil hattie says:

Dang, that sux. I tossed a little love your way. I’m self-employed too, so I can relate. Hope this helps … hope you get enough to stay afloat … I hope you keep asking for what you need. Nail soup! If we all contribute what we have, we’ll all be better off.

    Thanks for all you do.

  29. Marsha says:

Since I no longer have a Democrat to whom to donate, you get it. I used to feel so good about clicking Alegre’s button for Hillary….this felt great, too.

Thank you for all you do.

Good luck — we are all going to need a lot of luck to get through the next three years.

  31. octogalore says:

Thanks, Violet. And, I’m sorry about the client. I wish there were some way you could collect for your hard work.

  32. Violet says:

My email is back and I’ve been getting caught up with thank-yous. I am so grateful to everyone for their support. If you didn’t get a thank-you from me, let me know and I’ll check to make sure nothing got lost in the email.

    You people are the best!

  33. anniethena says:

Just checked back in now- thanks for fishing me out Violet. I got your thank you email right away.
Keep us posted - I can probably manage a little extra if you still need it.
