- LIEBERMAN VOWS TO FILIBUSTER BILL WITH PUBLIC OPTION
- Lieberman: I’ll block vote on Reid plan
- Lieberman will join filibuster of public option
And a zillion other headlines of similar ilk staring up at me from Memeorandum.
Who is this person? I mean that. Who is this guy? Is Joe Lieberman a fucking Orc?

Perfect answer, Aspen. Perfect.

slythwolf says:
Look at that smug fucking look on his face.
No, he isn’t an Orc. If he were an Orc he would be mindlessly working for the guy pulling this kind of shit.
That is, if he were a Tolkien Orc, obviously. Not a World of Warcraft Orc. Because WoW Orcs take care of each other and would never stand for this kind of bullshit.

cellocat says:
He’s Saruman.

slythwolf says:
He is most definitely Saruman of the Many Colors, yes.

Aspen says:
Bluelyon, on behalf of my state, I apologize for this embarrassment. We tried to get rid of him, but you know how that worked out.

Reading around the blogs and the op-eds, I’m seeing a few theories:
1. Lieberman is doing the White House’s bidding on this. And no, it’s not anti-Obama blogs saying that. Firedoglake, Digby’s commenters, etc., etc. Only a year after the election, and how the unicorn has fallen.
2. Lieberman is doing Reid’s bidding on this — or Reid’s and the White House’s bidding. The whole thing is Senate Kabuki Theatre designed to kill the public option and bring back Queen Snow’s Mighty Triggers.
3. Lieberman is positioning himself for some other kind of deal with Reid. This is an obvious guess, but what deal?
4. Lieberman is just acting all apeshit to get attention the way he always does because he’s an evil fucktwit.
5. Lieberman is fulfilling his blood pact with Aetna.
6. Lieberman is an Orc (okay, nobody else is picking that up, but still).
Have I missed any?

There’s lots of health insurance industry in CT, isn’t there?

Watching the “fauxgressives’” angst over the “Public Option” is a real eye opener. The “Public Option” is a complete sham but the Black Agenda Report has the best analysis of what is going on.
“The Obama White House and the insurance industry are putting on a big show for the public, with both sides pretending to be engaged in a battle royal over the shape of health care legislation. In reality, the insurance corporations have already won the war. But for political reasons, it’s necessary that the insurance companies and the White House act like professional wrestlers. And like TV wrestling, it’s all fake.”

That is the best description…”Pro Wrestling” the fauxgressives are just like pro wrestling fans…a huge emotional investment in a complete fraud..go figure.

Put me down for Lieberman doing the WH & Reid’s bidding — this way Obama & Reid (who’s re-election odds isn’t looking so good right now) can pretend they gave it the good ol’ “college try” for a “robust public option” but that “horrible” Leiberman* ruined it all. Under this scenario, Obama & Reid get to take the high road with the progs (like Digby, firedoglake, etc) who already hate Lieberman anyway. He’s the perfect scapegoat.
*(Please note, despite how “horrible” Leiberman is, the Dem. Party still invites him to caucus with them, etc)
Truth be told, the way this alleged health care “reform” is shaping up, the status quo might be a lot less harmful.

Simple answers to simple questions:
Yes.

madamab says:
You know what really gets me? Why do the Democrats pretend they need 60 votes to pass legislation?
They don’t. They need 51 votes. Thus, they can tell Joe Lieberman to go Orc away in Orthanc if they want to. BUT THEY DON’T WANT TO BECAUSE HE’S DOING WHAT OBAMA WANTS. He was Obama’s mentor in the Senate, by the way. Fun litte fact!
The 60 votes BS is to get around the fake filibuster that the Republicans never do. All they do is whisper “filibuster” and the Democrats fall over in a faint.
Here’s what a real political party would do. They would unite behind the best bill they could possibly fashion, then tell the opposition MINORITY PARTY to f*cking filibuster to their f*cking heart’s content.
I f*cking hate DINOs. At least with the Republicans, you know they are evil from the get-go. The Democrats pretend they care, then they screw you to the wall.

Yes. Insurance industry, period.
#3 on this list (link): He’s going to be the next one to encounter my footprint on his posterior. I’m hoping he gets primaried, but if not, I’ll be voting 3rd party in 2010.

Cozy!

Let me offer an alternate hypothesis. The public option and the other main propositions of these health care proposals are terrible, terrible ideas that should be stupped.
-
datechguy says:
I would suggest that Reid his happy about this because he is less interested in passing a bill that could cost him a majority vs giving his caucus cover on the bill.
Forgetting the merits which we likely disagree on politically you are dealing with people whose main interest is power and the perks that it brings, not using that power for some other purpose.
Republicans did this to us and that is one of the reasons why so many conservatives sat on their hands in 06 & 08.
Give me honorable political foes (such as the commentators here) vs a phony friend anyday.
-
Ciccina says:
I vote for reasons #1, 3, 4, and 6 inclusively. That why he looks so preternaturally smug.
Per # 2 -My gut says Reid hates Lieberman right now, because Reid just wants it to end. Doesn’t care about the outcome. He’s praying for sudden death.
In the end, at least one major constituency will be completely pissed off. Reid knows that whatever happens, O will pin it all on him (and Pelosi). Those two are stuck in an Aliens vs. Predator situation – “Whoever Wins, We Lose.”
As for #5 – Lieberman doesn’t have a blood pact with Aetna. Lieberman *is* Aetna.

leslie says:
And I’m not certain Lieberman has blood in his veins. Unless it’s the blood he drinks from his victims.

Topper Harley says:
@12 ‘filibuster’ is when one member of the opposition stands on the floor and reads the telephone book. To end filibuster requires 61 votes, at which point the clock is ticking for debate.
The problem here is that this isn’t a simple “up or down” type of vote like a nomination. This is thousands of pages of legislation, so there’s bound to be robust debate, to the point that it’s not the 51 votes they need, it’s the 61. Any 10 Democrats who want/need some concession in the bill are just as much of an obstruction as the Republicans.
The other avenue is reconciliation, which prevents a filibuster, but the problem there is that there are arcane Senate rules that govern what can be done to the bill.
