Blue Monday

By Violet Socks · Monday, August 24th, 2009 ·

Sorry, I’m in no mood to write a post.

Instead, here’s some of the greatest goddamn blues in the history of the world:

Did you hear those guitars? Did you hear that voice?

Okay, now go back and listen again. Repeat as needed.

It’s good, yeah? Yeah. Damn straight.

    oh no! this might help:

It’s Sly Stone on Ed Sullivan in 1968 and it is making me very very happy this morning despite everything. :)

  2. TheOtherDelphyne says:

Hey, Violet - those moods can be all consuming. Hope it passes quickly! Check your email.

May I recommend the Cowboy Junkies? They’ll sing you into a tub with a bottle of booze, a razor blade, and some pills. Imaginary of course. I’m one who thinks completely falling into the mood instead of fighting it makes it pass quicker. Or at least a natural speed instead of prolonging it.

Sorry I’ve never been one to tell someone to make lemonade.

Sure, it’s a depressing song, but it will make you happy through its sheer awesome-ness.

  5. Violet says:

Hey, peeps, you can actually post the videos themselves in the comment now (couldn’t do that with the old WordPress). Instead of pasting in the url, paste in the embed code. Just make sure it’s not wider than about 480 px.

  6. Violet says:

    Like this:

Jesus, I love that woman’s voice.

  7. monchichipox says:

OMG I love Tracy. boy do I have a story to go with this song LOL. Just downloaded some new stuff from her. I Used to Sing for You. My favorite she does is At this Point in My Life……(reaching for Ipod now)
If you’re in the mood for some good strong feminist stuff, and can throw away the stereotyping of country music tune in to some Loretta(it may be music but it’s still some of the best feminist writing). She always cheers me up.
    The Pill
Your Squaw is on the Warpath.
    Don’t Come Home a Drinkin’
    Portland Oregon

Or my all time feminist song Just Because I’m a Woman by Dolly Parton(especially considering the time it was written and released) “Now just let me tell you this then will both know where we stand. My mistakes are no worse than yours just because I’m a woman” You can distinctly hear the women cheering at the start of this song.

    monchichipox:

I’m not a lemonade maker either (definitely not) - just addicted to Sly Stone right now!

also - what is an “embed code”?

  10. madaha says:

    also - Violet -

don’t go! I only just discovered this awesome blog.

  11. Violet says:

When you’re on YouTube, instead of grabbing the url, look just below and instead grab the “embed” code.

I’m not going away. Just not a very good couple of days here. But I’m sure I’ll feel better tomorrow.

I had an album - yep, actually vinyl - called Teenage Tragedy. It had most of the classic tearjerker songs - Teen Angel, Patches, Leader of the Pack and more. It ended with two parodies, I’ve Got My Baby Back (sick but hysterical) and The Homecoming Queen’s Got a Gun, which the liner notes asserted tripled the population of Teenage Tragedy Heaven.

Anyway, when I was feeling blue I’d put it on and enjoy a good wallow. By the end I was laughing. Not bad therapy at all.

I ended up giving the album to a friend when I needed to clear out some stuff, but had transferred it to cassette. Unfortunately I lost the tape. Wish Rhino would reissue it on CD. Though eventually I may just re-compile it myself.

  13. madaha says:

cool, thanks. well, much appreciation on my end.

Oh, this is an awesome thread. Thank you! I too love Tracy … I haven’t listened to her lately, and I will remedy that immediately!

I also had to fortune to see B.B. King once, in a really small venue. And once, my sister and a couple of friends were invited to chat with him on his tour bus. (swoon)

goddess i love tracy. i’m listening to the link right now.

  17. Nina M. says:

I adore that gem of a line that ends the narrative portion of “Homecoming Queen..” with that great SoCa inflection…

“But we’ll never know who Johnny is
    ’cause, like, she’s dead.”

    lol.

I hope you feel better soon, Vi.

Good one, Violet. I too am feeling the blues, and listening to some. Funny, when I look at Real Clear Politics now, it’s totally shifted from “Obama is The One” to “Obama seems lost”. The MSM has finally woken up, but I am angry at them. The MSM took on the job of image-building (for Obama) and image-destroyers (for HRC and everyone else). As salesmen-in-chief, they turned the country for Obama, and now they get to sell their piddling papers tearing him apart. I am not defending him at all, lest anyone get the wrong idea. But I am suddenly angry with a news industry that doesn’t peddle news, but now deals in constructing alternate realities that they then get to dismantle and deconstruct as they wish.

Funnily enough, I am reading a novel set in Paris about 1789. The parallels are a little eerie…

Try some John Lee Hooker or Etta James. Warning - a bottle of scotch, some cigarettes, haze and a honkey tonk atmosphere seem to be required to listen to the blues….and get the full-on effect, that is.

Southern gal now in Southern Cal speaking.

Alas, this isn’t effective if one is battling clinical depression! :-)

For some wacky reason I thought my SuperHero was above such things as us mere mortals experienced. Wierd, uh? (I meant me, not Violet)

Anyway, hope you feel better, you’re amazing! Walkies in the park, doggy purrs, scrumptious food with friends followed by a bubble bath with my rubber ducky collection usually takes the edge off. Lately I’ve been seriously working on truly accepting that which cannot be changed, which seems to help the most. And realizing the limits to what realistically can be achieved in the time I have left, is very liberating, eliminates the guilt from feeling like I’m not doing enough. Finding pleasure in reorganizing bits of my life. No idea if any of that would help anybody else, though.

Emergency cat hugs are hilarious, when they spontaniously decide it’s been five minutes since the last one.

  22. simply wondered says:

personally, i enjoy throwing things away. that doesn’t look so convincing when you write it down.

  23. femina says:

I put up “The Thrill Is Gone” on a political blog’s relaxing music weekends during the primary and it received no response. In fact, someone later received raves for her Brothers in Arms track and that delightful acoustic guitar. It just isn’t blues.

We know what great blues sounds like and BB produced the best. Bravo!

  24. octogalore says:

I hope you feel better, Violet.
