The New Democratic Party (NDP) is forming

This is a ground-shifting, earth-quaking year in American politics, though not in the way any of us expected. I don’t know what will come of the various initiatives popping up here and there, but I know that nothing will ever be the same again.

Just got this in the mail from Murphy of PumaPAC; I reprint it here in its entirety:

August 29, 2008
TO: Puma PAC Members
FROM: Murphy
Subject: Announcement

Hello Puma PAC,
Goodbye Howard Dean. Goodbye Barack Obama. Goodbye Nancy Pelosi. Goodbye Donna Brazile. You have not only lost the White House for the Democratic Party. Today you have brought the Democratic Party to the brink of irrelevancy altogether. John McCain has played you all like a piano.

Today we say GOODBYE to the OLD Democratic Party. The OLD Democratic Party has led us to DISASTER. John McCain and Sarah Palin will win in November by a landslide.

TODAY, August 29th 2008, Puma PAC has started a new political party:

THE NEW DEMOCRATIC PARTY
We have a website launching tonight. at www.thenewdemocraticparty.org and www.ndp.org We will be modeled on Alice Paul’s National Woman’s Party. We will NOT be running candidates. We WILL be endorsing candidates.
We will be the Party for All Disaffected Democrats who are FINISHED WITH THE OLD DEMOCRATIC PARTY. We are NOT Republicans, though millions of us will vote McCain/Palin in November.

Our Platform is the Platform of the TRUE Democratic Party

* Healthcare for All

* Equal Rights

* Reproductive Rights

* Worker Protections

* Envmtl Protections

* Fair Immigration Policy

* Help for working class college students

* Good public schools

WE MUST PREVENT A REPUBLICAN TAKEOVER OF THE ELECTORATE. WE NEED A POLITICAL PARTY FOR ALL THE MILLIONS WHO WANT TO BOLT THE DEMS AFTER TODAY’S FIASCO.

Please JOIN US. We NEED the Platform and Principles of GOOD DEMOCRATIC VALUES now MORE THAN EVER. We MUST STAY UNITED AS A DEMOCRATIC VOTING BLOC OR WE COULD LOSE EVERYTHING.

To Join the New Democratic Party, please send an email with your name and state today to newdemparty@pumapac.org

Listen in tonight to the Lion’s Share on No We Won’t Radio with Sheri Tagg.
Riverdaughter and I will join her to talk about today’s events and where we go from here.

    “Envmtl Protections?”

    Look, I’m all for this, but my God, if you can’t be arsed to spell out “environmental,” the wheels are coming off already.

  2. Violet says:

    Har! I don’t think Murphy would appreciate that, but it did make me laugh.

  3. jeanette says:

    The Puma PAC is specifically being led by someone who voted for McCain in 2000. This is not a Democratic grassroots effort. It is Republican astroturfing. Do not be misled — this is a specific attempt to divide the Democratic Party so that the Republicans can take over.

    This is good, really good.
    My 2 cents: universal healthcare, not a mandate. A mandate makes you a criminal if you don’t buy heath insurance, favors insurance companies and hurts mid-income people who earn too much to get govtl. assistance but too little to pay for it themselves.

  5. Tabby Lavalamp says:

    Oh dear. This is all going to be very confusing.

    Besides, I’m not sure it’s the best idea to name yourself after a party that’s never formed a federal government or even the official opposition. (I’m still most likely going to vote for them next election though, depending on who they and the Liberals run in my riding.)

  6. Tman says:

    I wonder if the problem isn’t the democrats or the republicans for that matter, but the fact that we only have two parties that we get to choose from.

    The list of principles that Dr. Socks has presented aren’t necessarily more progressive than they are conservative. It’s more about protection of individual rights with some common sense community ideals thrown in for safety.

    We need a third party worth a damn if we want to see a chance of marking off everything on that list.

  7. ginmar says:

    Erm….They’re not going to vote Republican except when they are? No. No thanks. I won’t vote Republican, ever.

  8. Violet says:

    Looky here:

    How the legend grows! Based on fact-challenged post by Amanda Marcotte — which she has yet to retract, despite my writing to her — the fact that Murphy gave $200 to McCain in the primaries 8 years ago (but didn’t vote for him) has now morphed into her voting for McCain.

    Jeannette, do not be misled. Bullshit from Pandagon is a specific attempt to discredit Hillary supporters.

  9. Apostate says:

    I’ll be really glad when this election is over. I can’t stomach women voting for McCain in the name of support for HRC.

    This is getting into self-parody territory.

  10. Perry Logan says:

    Count me in.

    The Democratic Party died the minute the Obama gang started calling their fellow Democrats racists.

  11. kenoshaMarge says:

    I love the PUMAs and have done all the PUMA Prowls Darragh sent me.

    But I not going to join any party ever again. I’ve become a liberal Independent and I like it. I can now vote any which way I want to without worrying about party loyalty. My loyalty is to my conscience and my country. And that’s how I will vote from now.

    Wish them all luck though.

  12. thebewilderness says:

    I think the PUMA concept has been taken over by Republican ratfuckers.

    It is revolting.

  13. Violet says:

    Yes, it is revolting, but it doesn’t have anything to do with real PUMAs.

    Anybody can put the word “Puma” or “PumaPAC” on anything they do.

    I’m familiar with PUMAs, I work with the top-levels of the PUMA movement, and they’re serious Democrats. They’re not nutcases.

  14. JoshA says:

    Why not just join the Greens?

  15. quixote says:

    I have that question too. What are the reasons for not simply throwing our weight behind the Greens?

  16. Heart says:

    I have that question too. What are the reasons for not simply throwing our weight behind the Greens?

    Yeah. Or behind the Free Soil Party (http://freesoil.org)?

    How is it that persons voting Republican, for McCain, for PUMA reasons, feel they can credibly assert they are the heirs of the National Women’s Party?!

  17. RKMK says:

    How is it that persons voting Republican, for McCain, for PUMA reasons, feel they can credibly assert they are the heirs of the National Women’s Party?!

    Someone correct me if I’m wrong, but I believe the Official PumaPAC position (and they’re the ones who put forth this NDP thingie) is to vote “Nothing on Top” on the ballot this November. That is, to ensure a Democratic Congress, but to vote neither McCain nor Obama for President.

    The PUMAs are large and diverse, and their whole mission is to not dictate your vote, though, so I’m sure some in the coalition are voting for McCain. But you can’t say Darragh Murphy and PumaPAC, specifically, are counseling a McCain vote.

  18. nene says:

    “How is it that persons voting Republican, for McCain, for PUMA reasons, feel they can credibly assert they are the heirs of the National Women’s Party?!”

    Because we’re women?

  19. Greenconsciousness says:

    I don’t vote Green because they run anti semitic candidates and support Hamas and Hezbollah as freedom fighters. They have a cultural relativist position to Muslim women’s rights and transnational women’s rights in general. I don’t see any more feminist outreach more substantial than the Dems lip service. Why are you voting Green? I am writing in Hillary.
