Truly, we are all possums
Love the Latin motto. Tell me, is it SOP for candidates to use seals that look an awful lot like the real Presidential seal? Or is this just another example of the subliminal advertising Obama’s campaign is famous for?
Given how things have gone so far, this could totally work. The more people see Obama standing in front of 17 US flags and with a big pseudo-Presidential seal on the lectern in front of him, the more they’ll feel like it’s only natural for him to be President. They walk into that voting booth in November and their eyes will glaze over and Angela Lansbury will turn over the red queen and then they’ll pull the lever for Obama, just pull that lever because it’s what has to happen, see? They won’t be able to help themselves.
Personally I hope Obama will start printing his own money. I’m playing around here on the computer with some graphical ideas, kind of a mash-up of the eye/pyramid thing and the Obama sunrise. Think I’ll send them off to the campaign. Couldn’t hurt.

Subliminal? This is over the top. Isn’t there some kind of law about impersonating presidential logos? I’m sure that the megalomaniac in the White House is not finding this funny.
If you do come up with an idea for the money, would you incorporate a Harry Potter Latin spell/charm on it. Vero possumus indeed - yuk.

Yes, but it would have to be a real forgery intended to deceive, like counterfeit money. The Possum Seal is reminiscent of the Presidential seal but isn’t a close enough copy to actually deceive anyone. It’s kind of like Monopoly money.

I put this on the previous thread, but it is also appropriate here:

Isn’t he supposed to stand for a change from everything that’s ridiculous and wrong about American politics? How is this manufactured consent campaign any different? The fauxgressive will be doing his own “Daisy” ad any day now.

Another pebble on that downward slope. May there be enough by August.
(Loved the near-translation of the near-Latin. Possumus, indeed)

It takes the cake doesn’t it?
And you are right, they are so hypnotized by the logo they will do exactly what you think, Dr. Socks.I’m ready to divorice and go expat — the question is where?

O ps: It’s totally hsyterical how the two people in that ad to the right are looking at that logo, no?
Did you plan that? Because it’s somehow just parfait…and than you for making me have a great little chuckle, today, in the midst o’all this grim…

Well, now I’m torn. I can’t stand Obama but I loves me some possums.
“Playing possum” is going to take on a whole new meaning in political circles.
This is off topic, sort of, but I’ve been following the FISA debacle closely, starting with Glenn Greenwald (first time I’ve read anything on Salon in months). Hundreds of horror-struck comments. So I went over to Kos to see what the comments are like over there. Scores of Obama supporters, the blinkers ripped from their eyes, wincing from the harsh glare of sun. Bunches of them are dropping Obama (contacting the campaign to ask for their money back, to be removed from mailing lists, etc).
[Don’t recall seeing many “i told you so” comments, which I think is good).
I knew this would happen, but I didn’t think it would happen so fast. Its worth checking out.

Greenwald: It’s either that he “chickened out” or Obama believes he will be President and wants these extreme powers for himself, no doubt, he believes, because he’ll exercise them magnanimously, for our Own Good. Whatever the motives Obama has embraced a bill that is not only redolent of many of the excesses of Bush’s executive power theories and surveillance state expansions, but worse, has done so by embracing the underlying rationale of “Be-scared-and-give-up-your-rights.” Note that the very first line of Obama’s statement warns us that we face what he calls “grave threats,” and that therefore, we must accept that our Leader needs more unlimited power, and the best we can do is trust that he will use it for our Good. Making matters worse still, what Obama did yesterday is in clear tension with an emphatic promise that he made just months ago.

Few Americans, I’d guess, know any Latin. Their thought processes will go: possumus = possums = rat-like marsupials = roadkill. Do you think Hillary pulled a reverse-Patty Solis Doyle and snuck a ringer into the Obama campaign?
I’m already working on my parody.

There is room for improvement in this seal. I do believe in truth in advertising.

And we made fun of Nancy Reagan with the red china and uniforms for the house staff. Looks as if Obama is not far behind. Only difference, Nancy was ALREADY there and his is wishful thinking.

Vero possumus is Latin for I Go Pogo.

Charles Lemos at By The Fault has the correct Latin translation for Yes, we can.
Vero possumus means ‘truly, to be able’…not quite hitting it.

It appears that those that called Obama the “presumptuous” nominee hit that nail directly on it’s pointy little head.
This is one damn arrogant little possum. Like Pogo said: “we have met the enemy and it is Obama”. Well Pogo would have said it if he’d known Obama.

cgeye says:
I dunno if appropriating one of the mottoes of Dame Edna Everage is the way Obama would want to go…. if he starts throwing gladiolas to the paups, well then, he’s pandering to the gay male vote — shouldn’t he be doing that now, in Stonewall season?
Welp, enshrining the shredding of the Constitution’s more important than actually supporting and one of the main principles, such as the pursuit of happiness, through that gay marriage thing…. Oh, hell, why even expect common human decency from a man who just asked for the powers a Central American dictator would blush at?
