I got your “sweetie” right here

By Violet Socks · Wednesday, May 14th, 2008 ·

Maybe we should just be glad he doesn’t call women bitches and hos, like his buddy Jay-Z.

    sweetie? how rude…

  2. Charmian says:

SWEETIE, what a sexist shit. I think the reporter’s station should demand an apology. Can you imagine if a politician called a black male reporter, boy?

This campaign is about race, right. A certain person of a certain race is above reproach.

  3. Violet says:

The campaign is about sexism. Sexism and our idiot punditocracy interfering with the election instead of reporting it.

Obama gets a pass because a) he’s male and b) he’s the media darling. And because sexism doesn’t exist.

  4. Jeff says:

Arrrgggghhhh. And it’s not the first time, as Kate Harding points out at Shakesville.

And I’d thought I’d decided this morning that I was going to mail in my ballot with Obama checked off. Now I’m up in the air again.

    I hate primaries.

  5. egalia says:

It’s okay, it’s only The Precious. Now if Hillary had said it, or anything remotely similar, that would be different.

  6. reader says:

Not the first time he did it either:

  7. sister of ye says:

A few months back I tried to figure out why I was developing a personal dislike for Obama instead of merely disagreeing with him. Then it hit me. I grew up 6 brothers and have heard every permutation of weaselly sexist put down. Obama reminded me of my brothers at their most obnoxious. That speech with the flipping-off finger game confirmed it without a doubt. I could just hear my brothers whining, “But, Mom! I was just scratching my face.”

If he’s by some chance elected we owe the women leaders of the world a fair warning that we are inflicting a Bush clone on them. He may not pull a neck-rub like Junior did on Merkel, but I’m sure it will something equally disrespectful.

  8. Violet says:

You’re exactly right, sister of ye. Robin Morgan called it months ago, and I’ve seen that in Obama from the beginning. He’s a Big Man On Campus. Mr. Cool, Mr. Cocky. I keep meaning to do a post on that, pulling out some of the incredible anecdotes about the guy. He’s so far up his own butt it’s not funny.

That’s also why so many women under the age of 30 don’t get it. In a few years they’ll be so sick of these player-types they won’t be able to look at a guy like Obama for more than 30 seconds without getting nauseated. But right now they’re still dumb and dazzled.

  9. SM says:

“Maybe we should just be glad he doesn’t call women bitches and hos, like his buddy Jay-Z. ”

He doesn’t call them bitches and hos, ON CAMERA.

  10. Andrea Dworkin says:

“you immagine if a reporter called obama boy” well not a reporter but Bill did that. Huffing and puffing over sweety just shows you are out for a fight and desperate to get your panties in a twist over anything.

  11. kenoshaMarge says:

Why do these guys think that a woman, a real woman would not be insulted at being called “Sweetie”. And why are more women willing to accept such demeaning, sexist remarks from any man?

I guess I won’t get an answer because I’ve been asking the same kind of question for most of my life. At 64 I’ve kind of given up expecting anything different.

  12. blondie says:

Oh, Andrea, Andrea, Andrea, there you go again. (enjoy that condescension? or find it a bit dismissive?) Cite for when Bill Clinton called Barack Obama, “boy,” please.

And if you don’t understand why it is sexist and condescending for a man in a position of power to call a woman, with whom he is unacquainted, “sweetie,” when she is just trying to do her job, go rent “Tootsie.” Lots of people understood it 26 years ago. Apparently, it’s time for a refresher course.

  13. Shane says:

Hey Violet, didn’t you get the memo about Robin Morgan and feminism? According to such entirely non-partisan sources as The Nation she’s not ‘nuanced’ enough to be an authentic contemporary feminist anymore, perhaps because she doesn’t support Obama. The new hip definition of ‘feminist’ appears to be ‘out of touch unless you hate Hillary Clinton (which has nothing to do with her gender, except for when it does, which is surprisingly often) and question Obama on NOTHING’, because selling out your own beliefs for a candidate who’ll gladly sell you out and already has is the nuanced way of doing things nowadays. Its also very wrong.

  14. Andrea Dworkin says:

blondie are you out for a fight ? I dont think this is the place for cattiness pantytwistyness and spewing venom.

  15. blondie says:

Aren’t you going to call me sweetie? And to be precise, I gave you a dose of condescension and dismissiveness, a la Ronald Reagan. Not to be confused with “cattiness pantytwistyness” [unsure just what that is, scratching head, or is that when you call it when a woman usurops methods of "debate" commonly employed by men?] and “spewing venom.”

By the by, locate a cite for the alleged quote?

  16. blondie says:

Darn that proofreading. Usurps. I meant to say usurps, and I hit the post button, when I meant to hit preview.

  17. Andrea Dworkin says:

Look eitheir you believe me or call me a liar and look it up yourself. Things I have to proove to you are exactly ZERO. My post was on the article and not personal on somebody who posted here. I would appreciate if you would keep it civil not make it personal and take out your lust for conflict on somebody else.

  18. blondie says:

Your words speak for themselves. I’m done with you.

  19. Andrea Dworkin says:

“Your words speak for themselves” haha that was a good one :)

  20. No Blood for Hubris says:

You should stop calling yourself Andrea Dworkin, sweetie.

  21. Andrea Dworkin says:

Also Jay-Z is obamas buddy ? How is that, because he is black ? Maybe Idi Amin is Obamas buddy too ?

  22. huh says:

fwiw obama did speak to this wednesday by calling the reporter… he got her voicemail:

“Hi Peggy. This is Barack Obama. I’m calling to apologize on two fronts. One was you didn’t get your question answered and I apologize. I thought that we had set up interviews with all the local stations. I guess we got it with your station but you weren’t the reporter that got the interview. And so, I broke my word. I apologize for that and I will make up for it.

“Second apology is for using the word ’sweetie.’ That’s a bad habit of mine. I do it sometimes with all kinds of people. I mean no disrespect and so I am duly chastened on that front. Feel free to call me back. I expect that my press team will be happy to try to make it up to you whenever we are in Detroit next.”

    Obama apologizes to sweetie

  23. Dawn Coyote says:

Obama is my dad. He even looks like my dad, though with a slightly darker complexion and more tightly curled hair. And, like my dad, he’s all facile charm, grace, confidence, and, I suspect, not a sincere bone in his body.

  24. PJ says:

Looks like maybe Andrea Dworkin is off her meds today.

  25. whaleshaman says:

But it’s okay, he deigned to wear teh flag pin to pander to the Michiganians [?] whose votes he’s planning to torch.

Watch the video again & check it out. And this from a man who didn’t even bother to wear the flag pin for Jesus! Wow, I bet this means he’s got the JC endorsement in the house already.

  26. Violet says:

Sorry about that — “Andrea Dworkin” is obviously some insane troll. I don’t know how it got in here.

Of course Bill never called Obama a “boy.” And Obama is a big Jay-Z fan (and I believe it’s mutual).

Matter of fact, Obama waltzed into his Iowa victory party to the strains of Jay-Z’s “99 problems but a bitch ain’t one.” Classy. Real classy.

  27. Red Queen says:

In case you all hadn’t heard- Obama hired 400 blogger boyz to make nice with the Clinton supporters. Do you think Andrea was the first of the flowers and candy set?

  28. Violet says:

No, I hadn’t heard that. Where did you see that?

  29. Red Queen says:

Hillary1000 has links and I also heard if from a friend who heard it from one of Obama’s campaign bots.

  30. slythwolf says:

    What a sneaky fucking bastard.

His “apology” should have A) been addressed to “Ms. [Lastname]” and not “Peggy” because he is not this woman’s friend–unless she gets to address him as “Barack–and B) demonstrated the slightest bit of understanding that what he said was sexual harassment, yes, I went there–and C) not included the extra condescending part about how it’s a “bad habit” (the biting your fingernails kind of bad habit? no, wait, biting your fingernails doesn’t degrade other people) that he calls “all kinds of people” “sweetie” (really? all kinds? even men? how come the conservatives haven’t jumped on that one and called him effeminate yet?).

Also IMO the part about how he wants to “make it up to” her with professional favors if she forgives him for sexually harassing her is–you guessed it–more sexual harassment.

  31. Keri says:

This is not the first time he’s used that word in a patronizing and sexist way. He was doing it all over the place in PA and Ohio campaign stops. It was in the media, but of course none of the clueless saw the sexism. I blogged about it here:

    http://ciardhapagan.livejournal.com/252035.html

    Bottom of the entry

  32. orlando says:

So he calls “all kinds of people” sweetie? Shall we ask him if any of them own a Y chromosome?

  33. Level Best says:

I’ve said this elsewhere, but I’ll say it here, too: if it comes down between Obama and McCain, I am writing in a woman. Let the Dem’s crash and burn in ‘08 because of their sexism, and perhaps they will be a wee bit more careful the next time.

  34. anna says:

You don’t have to write in a woman, you can vote for Cynthia McKinney (Green Party.)

  35. zuzu says:

    Michiganians [?]

    Michiganders.

  36. Lost Clown says:

    OK, two things
    1) Please FOR THE LOVE OF IPU do not post anti-feminist shit under the name Andrea Dworkin

    and

    2) Looks like maybe Andrea Dworkin is off her meds today

That is an incredibly insulting slur against people with mental health issues/disabilities and as a (mental health) (dis)Ability rights activist I please ask that everyone will keep in mind that all slurs, including those against the differently abled are not only horrible and should be condemned in their own right, but also (in my belief) go against the tenets of feminism.
