Is the goddamn speech over yet?
Mitt Romney’s religion speech has had more advance publicity than “The Passion of the Christ.” Every goddamn day for the past month, it seems, the media has been pumping it. “Romney schedules religious speech.” “Romney to discuss Mormonism.” “Romney will seek to allay fears.” “The most important speech of Romney’s career.” “Is this Romney’s JFK moment?”
Jesus H. Christ on a starship to Kolob.
Romney is a Republican. That means he’ll say whatever he thinks will soothe the wingnut batshit evangelicals who are the useful-idiot voting core of the Republican party. If he’s elected (bog help us) he’ll do what all Republican presidents do, which is run the country as a slush fund for the military-industrial-corporacracy while simultaneously backing whatever regressive social policies will continue to soothe the wingnut batshit evangelicals.
The main similarity between Mitt Romney and JFK is in their jawlines. Romney’s got that square-jawed look, same as JFK. Oh, and the hair — good thick head of hair.

Absolutely true! Romney is a corporatist. He’ll do and say anything to get into office. I know this first hand as someone who saw him in action as Gov. of MA.
I don’t believe Romney has any core beliefs at all, aside from making his rich friends even richer. That’s the real reason why he’s a Republican. His JFK moment? Please!

PS: I saw Beowulf. Normally, I wouldn’t bother with such a movie, but I promised my Mom I’d see it with her in 3d. We see all the 3d movies together, it’s kind of our thing.
It’s even worse than you thought. Chock full of every EVIL woman seductress stereotype you can imagine. I had to laugh when Beowulf finally “confessed” to mating with the monster’s mother. He exclaims: “I was weak, she seduced me with her charms.” See, he just couldn’t say no! It’s all her fault! Ha!
One more quick note, sorry about the thread hijack: A few men in the audience laughed out loud when the high heeled golden feet appeared. That was somewhat heartening.

What a fucking empty suit he is. He wants to be president so bad he is willing to do or say anything. It is almost too embarrassing to watch. His campaign strategy seems to be to affix his lips to Right Wing Ass and press hard.

ah! the gap between republicans and democrats…
here in the uk, it used to be simpler (maybe it was in the us too): the labour party were short stocky men with bad suits and northern accents while conservatives were taller, posher and better dressed - like dracula but without the social conscience.
now they all look the same, went to the same schools and sound like they advocate the same policies. the leader of the conservative party can even say rape isn’t nice or some such earth-shattering revelation. the fear in mainstream politicians of anything likely to frighten the horses has given us identikit politicians with apparently identikit policies. this obscures the actual differences - a female home secretary, commitment to human rights, genuine commitment to a degree of openness (well i would say that). annoyingly a significant little development goes unnoticed - that the government will commit ministers to getting official figures one day in advance of release as opposed to 5 at present.it’s small, as i said, but it reflects a real difference. of course given the media’s disenchantment with gordon brown it gets less attention than whether or not he smiles very much (!) but if we can look beneath the superficial (something the owners of ‘truth’ try to prevent at all costs) we can see some difference.
so why the hell have i hijacked this thread for a party political broadcast? guess i wanted to ask - is there any real liberal consensus that the democrats are still better than the republicans? (or more realistically that republicans are still worse). -

I think there’s still consensus that the Republicans are worse, because really there’s nothing holding the Republicans back from pure fascism. The Democrats have a non-fascist constituency, so that constrains them a little bit. Though personally I’ve been disappointed at how much the Democrats are pandering to the festering brain sickness crowd.
