  1. The Ghost of Violet says:

I just finished reading Carl Pope’s editorial in Salon, and they really need to let him out more often:

“The Chinese-Soviet border, where the loss of agricultural lands could force even more of the Chinese population north of the Amur.”

    and

“Even Canada, Norway and the Soviet Union, whose governments are beginning to make bellicose noises about control of the suddenly ice-free Arctic.”

  2. Infidel says:

    You’re an Alex Baldwin fan?

  3. The Ghost of Violet says:

You think that’s how he looks?

I see the resemblance, but Baldwin has sleazy eyes.

  4. Infidel says:

I am not homophobic so I can say with ease I am in love with the man and am grateful for his sincere dedication to public duty. Kudos Al on a meaningful and desereved Peace Prize.

  5. B. Dagger Lee says:

Hey, no harshing on Alex Baldwin, I’m fond of him.

    But totally yay Al!

  6. Christina says:

Just when you’re ready to give up on humanity, someone goes and does something awesome…

  7. Tabby Lavalamp says:

Imagine what the world would be like today if the winner of the 2000 election became president…

Now to get a little persnickety… It’s ALEC Baldwin, dagnabit! I’m sure there’s an Alex Baldwin somewhere in the world though, and maybe one who didn’t leave verbally abusive phone messages for his daughter.

  8. bob c says:

thanx Tabby, someone had to say it! I hope Gore folllows Carter’s example. He’ll have more influence, respect and chances to help than just being Prez.

  9. B. Dagger Lee says:

Tabby, you’re right, dangnabit! Alec Baldwin And these little lapses just get worse as I go along.

Alec definately has problems with anger.

  10. Gayle says:

    tabby,

Didn’t you hear? No one thinks Alec Baldwin’s rant was abusive anymore. Nope, that was completely normal behavior. In fact, we’re now suppose to commiserate with his rant because, as all good parents know, threatening to “come after” your daughter is far better than actually beating her and the threat is all they got. Oh, and the pig thing. No biggie– most good parents say much harsher things.

I know all this because I just listened to Dan Savage on “An American Life.” Dan didn’t seem at all concerned that Alec may well have planned to carry out his threat or that maybe he already did so in the past.

If big Dan says it, it has to be true!

  11. Gayle says:

Oh, and sorry for the thread drift.

    I’m glad Gore won, too.

  12. The Ghost of Violet says:

I didn’t know what you guys were talking about with Baldwin and his daughter, so I googled it. Jesus F. Christ. “Parental alienation”? That is a bullshit MRA move — I posted about it last year. Is Alec an MRA now?

One of his brothers is a shit-for-brains Christian fundie, so I’m wondering about the whole family.

Sorry, Ether Lord, but I’m feeling kind of icked out here.

  13. Gayle says:

He’s supposedly writing a book on the subject of Father’s Rights, Violet. I’ve heard him speak on the subject and he predictably parrots MRA talking points such as “Men are discriminated against in custody cases, shared custody is the only fair solution,” etc., and so forth.

He exhibits classic angry, divorced guy behavior, too. Did you ever hear what he has to say about his ex? It’s awful and so public. Now, as you mentioned, he’s claiming to have parental alienation syndrome.

    Shudder.

    Yahbut

  15. B. Dagger Lee says:

Alec’s a nutcase, no doubt. In addition to his inexcuseable rant, he periodically gets into fistfights on the street in NYC. I do enjoy his acting.

I enjoy Doris Lessing’s work too, though she’s a crusty old dame who has said a number of anti-feminist things.
