Hell On Earth, now with a reader poll

By Violet Socks · Tuesday, July 31st, 2007 ·

?

Where is this place?

Five guesses — click the “rest of this entry” link for the poll (sorry, if I put it on the front page everything gets messed up.)

Annoying but brutally honest caveat: I don’t actually know the answer! I can’t read the signs and there was no information accompanying the photo, so I’m clueless. Anybody out there know?

Dude, I live in a house, which means my neighbors are really loud. My bet’s on Hong Kong.

  2. Violet says:

How far apart are your houses?

  3. ginmar says:

Not far enough, dude, not nearly far enough. Say theirs was in Siberia, that would be far enough, the noisy little fuckers.

  4. simply wondered says:

‘Say theirs was in Siberia, that would be far enough, the noisy little fuckers.’ - tho not of course if your house was also in siberia. It’s all relative.

  5. Infidel says:

    Hong Kong

  6. therealUK says:

My best guess would be the (now evacuated and dismantled) walled city in Kowloon, Hong Kong.

Ahh - I just did a google image search “kowloon walled city” and there it is, though possibly with a query on that image in particular

  7. simply wondered says:

i don’t think i grew up in kowloon - tho i may not have been concentrating at the time.

  8. Infidel says:

If you take kowloon, reverse it, and add a d an e and a space= noodle wok!

  9. Violet says:

Hey, thanks for finding the picture source, Infidel!

You’re absolutely right, therealUK, it turns out it is Kowloon. I’d never seen this picture before but thought Hong Kong as soon as I found it, but wasn’t sure. Didn’t wish to be unfair to other Chinese cities that might be angling for a claim to hell on earth. Thanks for sorting it out for me, folks.

  10. Violet says:

Wait a minute, I take that back: it may not be Kowloon. It’s definitely Hong Kong, but it may not be Kowloon. May be an existing apartment building.
