Obama ‘08

By Violet Socks · Wednesday, January 17th, 2007 ·

Writing in Salon about Obama’s presidential chances, Walter Shapiro predicts that “the color of his skin [will be] close to an irrelevancy. ”

Heh.

True story: After reading the Salon piece I went to Technorati and searched on ‘Obama’. The very first result was “How can we prevent a black President??” from Stormfront. (And no, I’m not going to link to it).

He’s skinny. He has magnificent bone structure to his face. He’s articulate, the pace of his speech is comforting. He’s eloquent, he’s got Harvard credentials. The arm movements he uses are both forceful and measured. He looks great on TV. He has a great smile and has a sense of humor.
What ability does he have to gather around him advisors and doers? How will he dispatch the awesome duties, to whom will he delegate the awesome powers, newly established, by our present leader?
I totally trust Senator Obama’s political intentions. He is going to get hit hard on his policy enactment ability from all sides, especially if he indicates substantial and meaningful and leftist goals.
The “Black president question” seems irrelevant because pick-up trucks were being sold, just the same, over three seasons of President Palmer’s “24″.

I don’t know. I think we will find out just how racist and prejudiced this country is as election time nears (I already know that nearly half the population of this country is comprised of a bunch of idiots but others will be suprised, I think). Somehow I have a feeling that Southern “good ol’ boys”, as well as a lot more racist people than you thought, are going be up in arms about it. I hate that I suspect it because I’m more excited about Obama running than anyone else. But suspect it, I do.

What do you call someone who is predjudiced against stupid people (moronist?) Prejudiced against prejudiced people? I suppose I AM prejudiced in that way.

I hope, if Obama does run, that the election will be about issues, not stereotypes.

I know the debates will be about issues, but I mean the general talk of the voting public.

After the infamous Harold Ford ‘Call Me’ ad aired, my grandmother in New Mexico said to my mom, “You’re not voting for him - he’s black.” End of discussion. Which was depressing, because, according to Mom, that’s a 180 from how she was when they were younger.

I think it’s the same if Hillary or any other minority ran - the unofficial work of their opponent’s team would involve negative campaigns based on sex, religion, and race.

Here in Memphis, again, Steve Cohen ran (and won) for Representative of whatever district of Memphis. However, there were telephone polls asking, basically, if you wanted somebody in government who didn’t accept Christ as his personal savior.

I hope we can have a dignified-ish election with Obama or Hillary (or hell, anybody) running ‘08, but…

Get everyone surrounding GW, like Rove, Cheney, Libby, Snow, etc. and surround Obama with them so he can get elected- only dump them after and get real pro-democracy types that value people and don’t try to convince them of things that are not so, to run the government and lead the United States down a more glorious path.
