Friday Link Roundup
Busy, busy, busy. I promised a post on the evolution of Islam and it’s coming — I promise! — but I’ve gotten temporarily sidetracked with actually living my life. So, in the meantime, here are my favorite blogosphere items from the past couple of days:
File this under the “global feminist conspiracy that rules [...]
Bush Open to Hearings on Alito
LOUISVILLE, KY (AP) – President Bush said Wednesday that Senate hearings to confirm Supreme Court appointee Samuel Alito will be good for democracy as long as they don’t interfere with Alito’s elevation to the highest court.
Bush was initially opposed to having Alito undergo the traditional confirmation process, but made it clear that he [...]
$1000 in Cash, A Quickie, Then You Die
Blogging for choice.
1950s: A million illegal abortions a year are performed in the U.S. Over a thousand women die each year from complications.
2005: A million legal abortions a year are performed in the U.S. Fewer than a dozen women die each year from complications. [...]
Religions Evolve, Part 1: Christianity
P.Z. Myers is lamenting that a new myth-busting documentary from Richard Dawkins isn’t available here in Godbag America. Seeing as I’m a random pedant with an interest in this sort of thing, I’ve decided to offer up 10 Random Truths about Christianity. Next up: Islam, and then Judaism!

Choice, Shmoice
Suits on both sides of the aisle realize that if Roe goes down in flames, the war over choice will simply move to a new theatre — state legislatures, perhaps a Constitutional amendment. The war will go on, and war is what politicians feed on. The Republicans will need the continued support of the wingnut base to keep up the good fight against the abortionist infidels. The Democrats will be invigorated, maybe even united, and the money and votes will pour in. Happiness for the suits; happiness all around. Happiness while women die; happiness while desperate teenagers bleed to death on the floor of motel bathrooms. Happiness, happiness, happiness all around.
A Godbag By Any Other Name; or, Adventures in Synchronicity
Yesterday afternoon I was reading H.L. Mencken’s dispatches from the Scopes trial. Yesterday evening I was reading Ibn al-Rawandi on the historicity of Islam. Note these two passages:
H.L. Mencken on the Christian fundamentalist mindset:
“[These] people are simply unable to imagine a man who rejects the literal authority of the Bible. [...]
Update: Holy Oil Minister is the same guy who helped take down Harriet Miers
Remember Rev. Schenck, the godbag who smeared olive oil on the seats in the hearing room to assure Alito’s confirmation? (If you don’t, just scroll down a couple of posts — it’s right here on this page!) It turns out this guy isn’t just some garden-variety nutjob, sneaking around the Capitol, anointing [...]
Americans Narrowly Favor Actual Laws Instead of Made-Up Shit
From a popular magazine for rich people comes the startling news that most Americans still prefer a president to a king.
According to a recent AP poll, 56% of Americans think the government should have to get a warrant before spying on people. Of course party affiliation plays a big part here, [...]
Holy Oil on Chairs Will Ensure Alito Confirmation, Say Ministers
WASHINGTON (Wall Street Journal) — Insisting that God “certainly needs to be involved” in the Supreme Court confirmation process, three Christian ministers took steps yesterday to ensure that the upcoming confirmation hearings for Judge Samuel Alito would proceed according to God’s plan.
Avoiding Capitol Hill police to gain unauthorized admittance to the hearing [...]
All your uterus are belong to us
Speaking of time machines…. here’s this from NOW’s campaign to block Alito:
*Newsflash*
Restrictions on legal abortion increasing.
Women refused access to birth control.
Access to justice denied.
No, this isn’t a newsflash from 1973; it’s 2005. But we’re fighting these battles and many more.
Media Girl has a great post on this, with the kind of thoughtful comment thread that is usual for that site.
